The little Umbrian town of Citta della Pieve lies on the border between Umbria and Tuscany overlooking the still waters of Lake Trasimeno. The ancient town still revels in much of its ancient glory, with the medieval town centre still proudly defended by ancient walls, and you can even find the first hints of the Gothic style of building within its parish church.
The centre of Citta della Pieve is an amazing place to walk. 13th century walls still encase a large portion of the town, protecting monuments from throughout the centuries. The narrowest street in the whole of Italy, the Via Baciadonne, can be found here, which is testament to the town’s medieval credentials. The Tower del Pubblico is certainly worth visiting from a self catering villa in Citta della Pieve, and for those with an interest in art, the Dome holds many masterpieces from local artists from many periods, from Domenico Alfani, Antonio Circignani and Pietro Vannucci.
The cuisine of the region is famous throughout much of Italy as being some of the most delicious you can find. The fish from Lake Trasimero, wines from the slopes of the surrounding hills and a whole host of other local ingredients mean that local cuisine is both hearty and delicious. There are many cooking courses organised in the area, and if you would like to really treat people to a good meal from your self catering Citta della Pieve villa, there are some fantastic dishes which can be prepared simply.
Perugia is just 50km from a self catering Citta della Pieve villa or apartment. The city is a great place to visit, with much of the style and interest of many of the more famous cities like Florence and Pisa, yet the tourist crowds have largely stayed away. Although Perugia is still off the beaten tourist route, it won’t be for long, so try and visit quickly before word gets out!
The Mediterranean climate of Citta della Pieve means that you can happily walk the hills, fish Lake Trasimeno or go sightseeing at any time of year. During the summer months, the days are gloriously long, with temperatures often reaching the mid 30’s (˚C) during the heat of the day. In winter, temperatures are of course much cooler, but temperatures remain above 10˚C most days.
Perugia’s San Egidio Airport (PEG) is ideally located for taking a Citta della Pieve holiday. Just 30km from the middle of the village, Perugia Airport is a great asset for the town, and Ryanair provide regular flights from London Stansted (STN). Other routes to Perugia Airport are currently not in service, but Pisa (PSA), Florence (FLR) and Rome (FCO) Airports are not far away.
