For many people the ideal getaway is a vacation on a hot sunny island and Chios in the Aegean Sea is a great choice. This Greek island is actually nearer the Turkish west coast and has many interesting things for holidaymakers to do. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas, apartments, B&Bs and campsites.
There are some beautiful beaches on the island making them ideal destinations for sunbathing and swimming in the Aegean Sea. Many watersports are offered here too including scuba diving, paragliding, waterskiing, wakeboarding and windsurfing. Tourists can also have fun taking a ride on a banana boat, rings or take a boat trip around the island. Sea fishing is very popular in the summer with boats and equipment available to rent and no requirement to obtain a license. There are interesting walking paths on the island some of which are on the mountains, where there are some challenging climbs. There are 70 caves to explore on Chios or if holidaymakers prefer more traditional sports there are basketball, volleyball, football and tennis facilities available on the island. There are a number of Greek taverns, bars, cafes, restaurants and pita diners in Chios, which serve mainly traditional Greek fare and plenty of fish dishes. Self catering holidaymakers will be able to purchase food and beverages from shops and the market of Chios. Tourists can buy many different souvenirs and will find shops selling designer clothes, jewellery, antiques and leather goods.
There are a number of interesting places to visit on the island including historic buildings and churches such as medieval fortresses and Byzantine monasteries. Holidaymakers can also visit a number of museums here with the Chios Maritime Museum and Koraes Library and Argenti Folklore Museum well worth seeing. Visitors may also like to try the Public Art Gallery near the main Chios square. Some of the villages here are fascinating and beautiful such as Anavatos, which is built on top of a rock of granite.
Summers in Chios are warm and dry with the average temperature in July and August about 27 degrees centigrade, but even June and September average 24 centigrade. There is hardly any rain in July and August. December and January can see an average of 110mm of rainfall, but the temperatures in the winter rarely drop into single figures.
Holidaymakers can get direct flights to Chios Island National Airport (JKH) from Amsterdam with Transavia Airlines as well as from Athens with Aegean Airlines, Astra Airlines, Athens Airways and Olympic Air. Visitors from other countries can get flights to Athens International Airport (ATH) and fly on to Chios. There are direct flights to Athens from Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Dublin, London, Moscow, Paris, Rome and Singapore amongst others. On arrival at Chios visitors can hire a car from Avis or Hertz and there are taxis available outside the airport building.
