The delightful area of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf was formed in 2001 by merging the two boroughs of Charlottenburg and Wilmersdorf together to form the new fourth borough of Berlin. Charlottenburg was the richest town of the Brandenburg Marches and consequently enjoys some beautiful villas, museums and a palace. It is just 6km (4 miles) from the centre of Berlin and Brandenburg Gate which are easily reached on the S-bahn train system.
The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Charlottenburg was a beautiful church which dates back to the 1890s. Badly damaged in a bombing raid in 1943, it has been restored as a church with a foyer and a separate belfry. The new church is very modern inside and consists of four buildings grouped around the ruins of the original church.
