Anyone looking for all year round activities in a beautiful location will find Central Carinthia to be a great area to visit. Located in the south of Austria, this area has many activities on offer as well as interesting places to visit. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, guesthouses, apartments, chalets, B&Bs and campsites.
There is a beach in Klagenfurt by the lake, where visitors can sunbathe, swim, play volleyball and soccer. There are a series of hiking trails in the region especially around the Lake Woerthersee area. The lake also offers various watersports, fishing and swimming and there are cycle paths along here too.Many outdoor swimming pools are open to the public in the Central Carinthia area as well as water parks. There are lots of golf courses in the area including the 18-hole Kaiserburg, which is the highest golf course in Carinthia. In the winter months visitors to the area can head to the Kelinkircheim and Turrach Resorts and participate in downhill and cross country skiing.Central Carinthia offers a large variety of restaurants, cafes and bars with good local cuisine. Self catering holidaymakers will find stores and markets in the area to buy food and drink from. There are numerous shops here too selling a range of souvenirs as well as arts and crafts shops.
Klagnefurt has many good places to visit including a theme park and various historic buildings. There are several museums located in the area including the Regional Museum of Carinthia, Carinthian Museum of Modern Art and Klagnefurt Mining Museum. Various significant religious buildings are located here too such as the Cathedral of Gurk. Castle Hochosterwitz is one of the most impressive castles in the country.About an hour and 20 minutes drive from Klagenfurt is Nockberge National Park, which is a wonderful place to visit with beautiful flora and fauna as well as great views. Families who enjoy seeing animals can visit the Nockalm Reptile Zoo in Patergassen and the Alpine Wild Animal Park/Naturstadl in Feld am See.
The warmest months in southern Austria are July and August with an average maximum high temperature of 25 degrees centigrade. December and January are usually the coldest months with an average temperature range of between -5 to -2 degrees centigrade and snow in winter is quite common. June and July are the wettest months with an average 125mm of rain.
Klagenfurt Airport (KLU) in Carinthia has a limited number of flights to destinations in Europe. These include flights to Frankfurt and London with Ryanair, Berlin, Cologne/Bonn, Hamburg and Hanover with Air Berlin, Munich with Lufthansa and Vienna with Austrian Airlines. There are several car rental services based at the airport. Alternatively visitors can get a flight to Ljubljana JoÅ¾e Pu?nik Airport (LJU) in Slovenia, which is about a one hour’s drive away and has flights to and from Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, London, Munich, Paris and Zurich with Adria Airways as well as numerous other destinations. Again there are car rental firms on site at the airport.
