The comune of Cardedu is located in the Ogliastra province of Sardinia, 17km from the co-capital of Tortoli. This coastal village is known for its limestone rocks, sandy beach and surrounding countryside – allowing you to add a rural feel to your summer beach holiday. Both outdoor and indoor activities, amenities and attractions can be found in Cardedu, making it a popular destination with all members of the family.
Cardedu is located in a rural region of Sardinia, meaning outdoor activities such as hiking and mountain climbing can be enjoyed amongst a stunning and unspoilt backdrop. A great way of getting around is to hire a bicycle or mountain bike from Cardedu village centre, and head out with a packed lunch for a day of exploring. Remember to take plenty of water – you’ll need it in the strong Sardinian sunshine.
Cardedu is close to the beaches of the central east coast, and the clean sands and blue waters mean that they are ideal for families with young children. The waters are shallow for a considerable distance out, meaning children can play in the sunshine in relative safety. Some of the views from Cardedu beach are excellent, taking in a panoramic vista of sea, mountains, rocks and coastline.
Music, food, drink and celebrations are a huge part of Sardinian life, and Cardedu plays host to several festivals and events throughout the year. The majority of these are held in summer months to take advantage of the fantastic weather of the season. ‘Insieme a Cardedu’ is an especially popular summer event, and combines many types of entertainment to the benefit of both locals and tourists.
Tortoli, the co-capital of the Ogliastra province, is just 17km from Cardedu and makes for a popular day trip option. The town has an interesting history that dates back many hundreds of years, but today is more visited due to its excellent restaurants and modern tourist facilities. This part of Sardinia is particularly rural and the use of a hire car is strongly recommended if you want to explore it to its maximum potential.
May and June are great months for a holiday in Cardedu, as temperatures are commonly in the mid-twenties, the weather is usually sunny and humidity is low to moderate. Temperatures continue to increase all the way through to late August, but it is only recommended that you visit at this time of the year if you are happy to put up with increased humidity.
Bmibaby, Ryanair, British Airways and easyJet all fly from the UK to Cagliari-Elmas Airport (CAG) on a regular basis, and Cardedu, 113km away, can be reached within two hours of leaving the arrivals lounge. There are no nearer options for international flights, but the journey through the Sardinian countryside is far more of a joy than a chore.
