The capital of Madeira, Funchal is just 10km from a holiday rental in Canico. The town is well worth exploring by foot, as there is a huge concentration of fascinating sites in a very small area around the old city centre. With botanical gardens, a huge 15th Century Cathedral, some excellent art galleries and numerous historical monuments, it is little wonder Funchal is such a popular day trip from Canico.
All year round, conditions in Madeira are perfect for a holiday. Whatever time of year you visit, temperatures will almost always be between 15 & 34°C. Average temperatures in the warmest month (August) average 24°C, and remain around 20°C during January (the coldest month).
Madeira Airport (FNC) is located just outside Funchal, and within 20 minutes of holiday accommodation in Canico. There are a range of cheap flights to Madeira available from the UK with British Airways, but for the largest range of departure points and the cheapest fares, you may have to find a connection via mainland Portugal.
