Holidaymakers looking for some Caribbean sunshine on one of the smaller quieter islands may like to visit Cades Bay. This is a wonderfully scenic place on the island of Nevis, which is situated in the Leeward Islands of the eastern Caribbean. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas and holiday homes.
This is a small island only seven miles long and five miles wide and offers great views for hikers to see such as the rainforests, plantations and a volcano. The nearest beach is just a few hundred metres away. The white sandy beaches are ideal for sunbathing and the calm crystal clear waters are wonderful for swimming in. The island’s only 18-hole golf course is about five minutes drive from Cades Bay and there is another on neighbouring St Kitts. Fishing trips are also popular here with the waters around the island filled with tuna, wahoo, dorado, kingfish, barracuda, shark, snapper and mahi mahi. Other activities available here include tennis, snorkelling, diving, water skiing and windsurfing. There are numerous bars, inns and restaurants located close to the Cades Bay Area mainly serving West Indian cuisine although there are a few Chinese restaurants on Nevis too. There is not such a big choice of shops on Nevis compared to other Caribbean islands. However, holidaymakers will find several places selling gifts and souvenirs such as clothing, artwork and local handicrafts.
The capital of Nevis is Charleston and is well worth visiting for its 18th century charm. The island boasts many interesting buildings including the old plantation houses. Ferries carry passengers to the neighbouring island of St Kitts from Cades Bay. The island has many remnants from its colonial past as well as the Horatio Nelson Museum, dedicated to the life of the great British naval hero. The Alexander Hamilton House is another interesting place to visit
The climate here is tempered somewhat by the sea breeze but remains constant throughout the year at an average of between 24 and 26 degrees centigrade. Whilst it can rain throughout the year the wettest time is between July and November, which also happens to be the hurricane season. The humidity remains fairly low too at around 71 percent.
