The town of Bergamo lies in the Italian region of Lombardy, to the northeast of Milan. The enchanting medieval town is picturesquely nestled at the foothills of Alps. It is renowned for its artistic history and culture, and there are plenty of attractions for visitors to Bergamo accommodation. It offers the best of northern Italy charm and peaceful scenery, making it the perfect location for a romantic holiday or short break.
Bergamo is divided into two areas, the upper city (Città alta), which is surrounded by 17th century walls, and the lower city (Città bassa) where you will find the modern city center. The upper city is best explored on foot, as parking spaces are limited. Here you can see fascinating architecture and places of interest that include the Piazza Vecchia that is lined with Renaissance buildings, Cittadella, Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and the tower of Campanonebut, which offers fantastic views of across the city and surrounding countryside. On Wednesdays and Sundays, from April to October there are guided tours, conducted in English, around the historic city center.
In the lower part of the town the streets are bustling and it is a great place to enjoy Bergamo cuisine at restaurants such as La Bruschetta and La Taverna dei Ghiottoni. You can end your delicious meal with a glass of local wine and a Polenta pastry. The lower town also has interesting attractions such as Accademia Carrara, a gallery that houses an impressive collection of medieval, Renaissance and Baroque paintings.
There are various cultural events and festivals that take place during the year. Some of these events include Donizetti Festival, a Baroque music festival that is held each September and the Estate vivi la tua città (Summer festival), which includes various celebrations and shows from June to September.
Bergamo is a great base from which to explore the rest of the Lombardy region. The fashionable and modern city of Milan is only 40km away and makes an excellent day trip for those renting holiday villas in Bergamo.
Bergamo is also ideally located to make day trips to the northern Italian lakes: Lake Iseo, Como and Garda, which are approximately 35km away. You can enjoy water sports on the lakes or take a leisurely walk on the wooded hillsides that surround the lakes. Nearby there are also a handful ski resorts, including Monte Pora Presolana, Foppolo, San Simone, Valtorta and Spiazzi di Gromo, making the town an ideal location for Bergamo skiing holidays.
Bergamo weather is characteristic of continental climates – the summers are hot with temperatures in the 30°Cs, and the winter cold. Renting holiday apartments in Bergamo in winter is ideal for skiing holidays.
The Bergamo Milan airport is Orio Al Serio (BGY). Ryanair offers cheap flights from the UK to Bergamo airport. Alitalia also offers flights from the UK to Bergamo airport.
