Holidaymakers looking for a different coastal resort to visit by the Adriatic Sea should pay a visit to Bar in Montenegro. This port town on the west coast of the country has plenty of things for visitors to see and do. Visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas and apartments.
The municipality of Bar has some lovely long sandy beaches such as Sutomore, which are ideal for sunbathing and taking a swim in the Adriatic Sea. Various watersports can be tried here such as sailing, surfing, windsurfing, water skiing, fishing and diving.
Holidaymakers can either participate in or watch beach volleyball and soccer at Sutomore. Bar has some lovely scenic coastal walks that can be enjoyed by hikers as well as cyclists and horse riders. Other sports popular in this area include tennis with several courts open to the public.
Many bars, coffee shops and restaurants are located in Bar serving local dishes and some international fare too. The area has a shopping mall with a good choice of shops with various gifts and souvenirs. Self catering holidaymakers will be able to purchase food and drink from various stores in the town.
Holidaymakers will find many fascinating places and sites to visit in the Bar area including King Nikola’s Palace, which sits right by the sea. Built in the 19th century, the palace now houses the County Museum with many important archaeological finds from the region. Visitors to the Bar municipality will see numerous remnants from the rich past of the area such as the remnants of Bar Triconch Church, which dates back to the 6th century.
Near Sutomore visitors can see the partially preserved fortress of Nehaj. There are several churches and monasteries built in the 14th and 15th centuries to be seen here. One of the oldest olive trees in the world lives in Bar too. The Old Olive of Mirovica is believed to be over 2,000 years old. Holidaymakers can take less than an hour’s trip to the nation’s capital city Podgorica, where there are many museums, galleries and historic places to visit.
July and August are the warmest months of the year with average high temperatures of 29 degrees centigrade. The coldest month is January with average highs of 8 degrees centigrade and lows of zero degrees, although the temperatures can drop to below freezing. November is usually the wettest month with average rainfall of about 200mm.
Podgorica Airport (TGD) is approximately 50 minutes drive from Bar. Flights arrive here from various international airports including Belgrade (BEG), Copenhagen (CPH), Frankfurt (FRA), London-Gatwick (LGW), Moscow-Domodedovo (DME), Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Rome-Fiumicino (FCO), Vienna (VIE) and Zurich (ZRH) amongst others. Several car rental companies are represented at the airport and there are taxis available here too. Visitors from Italy can get to Bar by ferry from Bari or Ancona.
