Alvor is an ancient village on the Algarve in Portugal which has managed to stave off the lure of over development so the narrow one-ended streets have retained their charm and the treasure which they hold. An Alvor self catering villa is an ideal place to enjoy a peaceful Algarve beach holiday in authentic surrounding, whist remaining within a short distance of the bustling centres of the Algarve holiday resorts. Family holidays to Alvor are great due to the wealth of beaches and proximity to a vast range of entertainment centres.
Amongst the streets is a wealth of lively bars which are great fun to investigate from an apartment in Alvor. Life music and irresistible aromas drift into the streets drawing you inside to sample the local delicacies and way of life. Having been largely flattened by the 1755 earthquake, the only point of special interest is the stunning little church of Igreja Matriz, which survived from the 16th Century. The ornate carvings around the doors are testament to the magnificent craft work of the Alvor region.
From a holiday rental in Alvor, you have the choice of open sandy beaches stretching as far as the eye can see until it reaches the estuary upon which Alvor is situated, or a range of small cove beaches nestled along the rocky Algarve coastline. The caves of Joao de Areus and the red cliff backed beaches of Praia dos Tres Immaos are well worth investigation if you have time when staying in an apartment in Alvor.
Alvor has two golf courses on the town limits, Alto Golf Course and Penina Golf Course, which are both open to the public. The Hotel Alvor also has a tennis club which is open to non-residents.
Portimao is very close to an apartment in Alvor, providing this region of the Algarve with a commercial centre. There are an extensive range of shops, bars and international restaurants in Portimao, which add to the cosmopolitan feel and quick pace of life.
Praia da Rocha is one of Portugal’s oldest tourist developments, just 6km down the road from an Alvor villa. The beautiful bay is ideal for swimming and water sports, and due to the resort’s age, there is a huge amount of entertainment day and night to be reveled in. The nightlife is exciting, especially if you venture into the casino.
Temperatures in the Algarve rarely dip below 12˚C, even in the depths of winter. Averages in winter are around 14˚C, and in summer temperatures average 24˚C although they can soar to over 30˚C during July and August.
To reach a holiday apartment or villa in Alvor, you must fly to Faro Airport (FAO). Faro receives huge numbers of direct flights from the UK which take around 3 hours. Due to the number of flights, there are regular deals and offers making a holiday rental in Alvor extremely good value.
