Quietly hidden in the northwest corner of Sardinia, Alghero is a largely untouched fishing port which has been paid the biggest compliment possible by the Italian tourist board; they have kept quiet about it! The streets of Alghero are regularly filled with the sounds of traditional music and celebrations of the numerous the saints which hold a certain importance to the people of Alghero. The Sea Urchin Fair (end of January), Alghero Summer Music Festival (August), fiesta of the Virgin of Valverde (1-10th July) and the Tourists’ Fair in August are all excellent times to take self catering Alghero accommodation.
During your stay in a villa in Alghero, you will undoubtedly spend some time drifting down the main streets of Via Roma, Via Principe Umberto and Via Carlo Alnerto, which are home to the pick of the cities best shops, restaurants and bars. The Costa Smeralda is home to the nicest beaches in Sardinia, and yachting is a very important past-time to the inhabitants and visitors alike. Average temperatures peak at around 30˚C in July and August, when Alghero accommodation’s most impressive asset is their proximity to the beaches. Spring and autumn are lovely times to visit Alghero too, as average temperatures do not dip below 20˚C from the beginning of May until the end of October. Even in winter, averages remain around 13˚C.
There are some very cheap flights to be found to Alghero International Airport, which is around a 20 minute drive from the city centre. Ryanair provide especially cheap flights to Alghero from London Stansted (STN).
