The village of Aigues is located inland, between Alicante and Benidorm, offering a rural retreat yet just 10 minutes drive from the white sand beaches of Costa Blanca. The mountains offers stunning scenery and many opportunities for walking through the pine woods. Aigues has a well-stocked supermarket and some bars and restaurants amidst the well-preserved brightly coloured houses. Families will enjoy the nearby water parks and the fun of nearby Benidorm.
The word Aigues comes from the Valencia word for water. The town has been a spa since 1816 when it was popular with the local aristocracy. It was later used to treat children with tuberculosis and finally fell into disuse. There are local plans to reopen the spa with thermal baths. The 14th century Moorish tower and the spa are two landmarks to look out for when exploring the town, along with the old village washhouse. A local market sells fresh produce each Wednesday and a craft market is held once a month in the village streets offering local handicrafts for sale.
Golfing - Golf lovers will enjoy the excellent golf facilities at the nearby Bonalba Golf Club. There are also several other golf courses in the area including the excellent 18-hole course further afield at Altea.
Beaches - El Campello and San Juan have excellent beaches as well as the fabled white sands of Benidorm. Enjoy sunbathing, safe swimming in the warm Mediterranean waters and plenty of watersports which are on offer.
Walking - There are unlimited opportunities for those who enjoy walking. Mountains, pine woods and Mediterranean sea views can all be enjoyed as you explore the area from your self catering villa base at Aigues.
Founded on its white sand beaches and year round sunshine, Benidorm also has several theme parks and water parks as well as a vibrant nightlife. Terra Mitica is a recreation of the lost civilizations of the Mediterranean including ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. Thrilling rides, shows and heart stopping water chutes make this a great day of activity. Aqualandia is a huge water park offering a great day of death slides, diving displays and water fun.
Alicante is more than just an airport! It is an old Spanish city full of historic monuments including Santa Barbara Castle and the San Nicolas de Bari Cathedral. The Old Town is a delightful area to explore and the harbour is the most visited area of the city. There are many boat trips from here; Tabarca Island is one not to be missed.
Temperatures in the Costa Brava area of Spain are mild in the winter and hot in the summer. Average temperatures in July and August may reach 33C (91F) with no rain. Winter temperatures rarely drop below 10C (50F) reaching 17C (62F ) during the day, with few showers so villa rentals at Aigues are a popular winter vacation too.
The nearest airport to your villa at Aigues is Alicante International Airport which is 37 km away. The drive takes about 30 minutes. This airport has regular cheap flights from all over Europe making it an ideal destination for a reasonably priced sunshine holiday.
