Puget Sound is a stretch of marine waterways west of Seattle in Washington State. It has given its name to the region surrounding this scenic waterway, which is popular for holiday rentals, particularly by boating enthusiasts. Puget Sound is west of the Cascade Range and east of the Olympic Mountains making it a very scenic area to explore.
Take a ride on one of the many state-run ferries that connect the larger islands in Puget Sound as well as carrying cars and passengers across the estuary from one side to the other. It is a great way to enjoy being on the water and seeing the outlying islands for a low fare. You may be lucky enough to see Orcas (killer whales) that frequent this area and which are a major tourist attraction. Seals, sea lions, northern elephant seals and other marine life including humpback and grey whales frequent Puget Sound too. Birdwatchers will find many species of waterbirds and gulls in this area. Explore this scenic area on foot, by kayak or by car to see the towering snow-capped mountains and many rushing waterfalls. Sailing, fishing, hiking, cycling, windsurfing and watersports are all popular in this area.
Spend a day in Seattle which is within easy driving distance of holiday rentals in the Puget Sound area. Take a trip up the Space Needle or visit the famous Pike Place Market in Downtown Seattle. You can even have coffee in the first Starbucks coffee shop overlooking the market. Mount Olympus is on the Olympic Peninsula, surrounded by the Olympic National Park. It is over 6,900 feet high and has several glaciers. Nearby Mount St Helens is an active volcano in the Cascades that famously blew its top in 1980. There is an excellent Visitor Centre with talks by rangers and many trails to lakes and scenic viewpoints.
The climate around Puget Sound is very damp with mild winters and showery warm summers. The summer months have average highs of 75°F (24°C) with less rain than other seasons. The mild, wet winter months have highs of around 46°F (8°C). The area very rarely has any frost or snow.
The nearest airport to holiday rentals in Puget Sound is Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA) Airport which is 11 miles south of the city of Seattle. Other airports include the Kenmore Air Harbor Seaplane base in Seattle and the Kenmore Air Harbor (KEH) about 9 miles away. A car is recommended for exploring the area around Puget Sound as many areas can only be accessed by driving.
