If it’s spectacular scenery and fantastic fresh air you are looking for on your vacation, then Oberwallis is the place for you during your holidays in Switzerland. Also known as Upper Valais this region is in the south of the country and offers many things for tourists to do. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, chalets, apartments, and campsites.
Swiss ski resorts offer challenging pistes and guaranteed snow especially round the Hohstock. Even in summer the mountains are spectacular with many excellent walking routes and many people come to this region to see the famous mountain known as the Matterhorn. A good way to get around the various villages here is to cycle and there are some excellent routes capturing fantastic views.
There are a few golf clubs in the Valais region including in Brig, Sion, Martingy and Zermatt. For some relaxation visitors can try the Brig Baths, which is one of the biggest open-air thermal centres in Switzerland. The Rhone River offers fishing opportunities and flows in to Lake Geneva, where holidaymakers can enjoy numerous watersports.
This German speaking part of the region offers many restaurants, bars and inns for visitors to experience. Brig in particular offers a wide variety of eateries as well as take-away establishments for self catering holidaymakers. Gifts and souvenirs can be purchased at numerous boutiques and stores.
Visitors will find many interesting places to visit here during their holidays in Switzerland including historic buildings such as Stockalper Palace in Brig. The area also has a number of museums including the Ecomuseum Simplon in Brig. Guided tours of the old historic town of Brig are also available for tourists.
Zermatt is an attractive village in Oberwallis and is the best place to see the Matterhorn as well as featuring an Alpine Museum. From Brig railway station passengers can take a ride to Northern Italy, passing through the world’s longest rail tunnel on the way. A couple of hours away is the wonderful city of Geneva, which has museums, magnificent architecture and of course Lake Geneva.
The warmest months in Oberwallis are July and August with an average maximum high temperature of 19 degrees centigrade. Between December and February the temperatures can drop to as low as -8 degrees centigrade. Rainfall is spread quite evenly throughout the year with around 50 to 60mm falling each month on average
The nearest airport is approximately two hours away in Geneva, where a large number of airlines have flights from various destinations across the world. easyJet covers the most cities including Amsterdam, Brussels, London-Gatwick, Madrid, Paris-Orly, Rome and Stockholm as well as many others. Car hire firms such as Alamo, Avis, Budget Europcar, Hertz, National and Sixt are all represented at the airport, with desks in the Arrivals level.
