Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday home in Gaucin - LA CASA DE LA PALMERA
Self-catering house, 4 apartments, 5 en-suite bedrooms sleeps 10 - 12 Gaucin

Holiday rental year round at La Casa de la Palmera, a large ancient courtyard house / villa in the heart of the mountain village of Gaucin. This is an artist's imaginative conversion of a traditional house into four self contained, self catering apartments, with en-suite facilities (including an artist's studio) around a central courtyard. Apartments all have private outside & inside dining areas, kitchen & bath or shower, great for extended families, friends sharing, art courses / activity groups or to rent separately. There is a communal dining room, shady outer courtyard, and flower filled garden for sunbathing and pool. Broad band wi fi internet connection. Set just below the romantic Moorish Castle of the Eagle, the house is within walking distance of bars and restaurants, and the surrounding mountain countryside is spectacular. Guided walks and bird-watching can be arranged with a local couple. 25 Minutes from Mediterranean beaches, many village pools and river swimming nearby

Spectacular mountain setting: La Casa de la Palmera is located below the Castle of the Eagle in the unspoilt 'white' village of Gaucin with spectacular views of mountains, rooftops and olive groves. The apartments have been decorated in an unconventional imaginative way, emphasising the rustic charm of the original house, with traditional 'Alhambra' hand-made tiles, hand-painted furniture, antique pots, exotic rugs, paintings and limited edition artist's prints. The house featured in the March 2003 issue of House and Garden Magazine, and previously in Gib Air in-flight magazine, and Country Living. The splendid garden packed with exotic plants, shady vine covered pergolas, sun beds and pool, can be enjoyed all year. River, pool and sea swimming are nearby and it is a perfect base for walking, bird- watching, painting and touring. Day trips are possible to Ronda, Seville and Tangiers. We can arrange for guided walks or we can provide advice for you to walk independentlly . Contact us for more information

Flexible accommodation: By combining the different apartments we are able to accommodate any number from 1 - 12. (Not suitable for very young children except babies.) The Courtyard suite and Terrace apartments both sleep 2 but also combine to make a fine 4 bedded self contained unit, and if combined also with the Terracotta room, would sleep 6, and with the studio 8. (this is the whole of the main part of the house) The Moorish Cottage (not shown - details available on our own website) is away from the main house and accommodates 2 (perfect for a honeymoon)but a sofa bed can be added. Camp beds and cots are also available. The best family economy combination is the Courtyard suite and Terracotta room which are adjacent, and for adults the Terrace/Studio combination.

The Terrace suite is a favourite for many couples, as it has a large private terrace with wonderful views of the garden and village. Perfect for a romantic getaway, it is a high gabled room, open-plan living room/ bedroom with kitchenette & large beautifully tiled Moorish bathroom.

All year holiday: During the summer months guests make the most of living and eating outside (each apartment has its own private outside eating area) and there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy the communal gardens and pool with a choice of several places to sit in the shade under umbrellas and pergolas, or lounge in the sun, beside the pool or in the garden. We do not have central heating, but in the winter we enjoy a mountain climate often with warm days, and cool evenings around a blazing log fire (warm clothes are a must). Electric heaters and blankets make a winter stay cosy. It may rain heavily in the low season, so guests need to be prepared, but the mountain air, spectacular mists and occasional thunder storms make for a dramatic healthy climate. We can organise walks to suit your personal interest be it birdwatching, botanical, archaeological or simply fun. Check in after 4pm, checkout 10am, although these times may be negotiable.

Details for holiday home Whole House, 5 Bedrooms, Sleeps 12, 5 Bathrooms

La Casa de la Palmera is a unique traditional Moorish courtyard house which still retains much of its original Andalucian character. While the apartments have been made comfortable and private the inner courtyard, semi-ruined outer courtyard and garden offer a haven to our guests, and are softly lit at night. You can enjoy the many aspects of a stunning setting, village and mountain views, and imaginative planting in an unusual and exotic garden. There is a plunge pool with jetstream, and several separate areas for sunbathing, and guests can also siesta in the shade. Our guests' cars often stay parked outside. We enjoy the regular return of many of our visitors. The house has a feeling of the old Spain, and is popular with art groups, for painting holidays, as there are so many charming things to draw and paint within the house and garden, from antique pots, baskets, and ceramics, to a variety of exotic palms, and a collection of New Zealand ferns and shrubs.

About Harold Moores, Brenda Hartill

My husband New Zealander, Harold Moores is a retired classical record shop owner and I am his British artist wife Brenda Hartill. We lived in London for many years, where I developed my painting and printmaking career, and Harold built up his West End record shop Harold Moores Records. Palmera was a getaway for us, a place where we could re-charge our batteries, enjoy a relaxed lifestyle with our children in a very safe environment. Now the children have left home, we still see it as a home away from home, and although we live most of the year in the UK, we have enjoyed the many people we have met while letting the house out to others.

Harold Moores, Brenda Hartill purchased this house in 1987
Why Harold Moores, Brenda Hartill chose Gaucin

Palmera was one of the few large original houses left in the village, and we fell in love with it's rustic charm. We felt very strongly that we wanted the house to retain the original ambience and spent many hours sourcing tiles, furniture and rusticpost and dishes to furnish the house. As the artist in the family, I spent many happy hours, and produced a wide variety of art works in the dream studio I built, and for some years I held printmaking courses in the house and garden.

What makes this house unique

Gaucin is a friendly village, and I have often spent time alone in the house, working in the studio and surrounding countryside. The house is set up to provide privacy for each apartment, while offering the possibility of meeting others. We know many people in the village, from Spanish, English, Norwegens, Americans,

Dutch, and New Zealanders, all of whom enjoy the international community settling into a genuine Spanish village. Harold saw the garden as a chance to experiment with his love of exotic plants, and together we created flowery nooks and crannys, places to siesta, sunpbathing by the pool, and shady pergolas over dining terraces.

Thanks for a wonderful week

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 22 April 2013 Date of Stay: April 2013
This is just a brief note to say thank you for an excellent break at la Casa de la Palmera. We all loved the beautiful house and garden, whose design did seem to achieve an ideal balance of public and private spaces, sometimes in ways that only became evident after a couple of days. The accommodation was very comfortable and the facilities all worked fine. And of course, the artworks on the walls were delightful. It’s very clear that this didn’t come about by happy accident – we were very impressed by the care and inspiration of the design and by what must have been a huge amount of work over decades to achieve this wonderful result.

We were also very lucky with the weather, which changed on the day we arrived and stayed good all week. There’s something especially luxurious about a late lunch on the terrace with good friends at this early stage of the year: the air temperature was even warm enough for the children to brave the pool for short dips. The rest of it we already know about from our previous visits to Gaucin, but the Andalucian countryside does look very beautiful clothed in bright green in Spring and we enjoyed a number of long walks.

Thank you from all of us for arranging for us to stay in such a lovely place and for all of your assistance in the detail over the past few months. We wish you every success with your further plans for the house and look forward to a return visit to Gaucin before too long.

PEACEFUL HAVEN

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 17 October 2011 Date of Stay: October 2011
Hello Brenda and Harold
Thank you so much for the use of your amazing house in Gaucin. Looking at the before and after book showed us what an incredible job you have done to create the peaceful and rustic haven that is La Casa de la Palmeras. Your garden Harold is truly fabulous.
We loved the Moorish Cottage very much and felt at home straight away. We looked at all the other apartments and they are all fabulous but we were thrilled with our cottage.
I’m longing to be sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine and my book instead of slaving away at work!!!!
We had a wonderful holiday – Grenada and the Alhambra were brilliant.
We had a day in Ronda which was stunning and the rest of the time we enjoyed the house and Gaucin which we have fallen for.
The cottage was clean and well cared for and the whole house is just as I imagined it.
Jo the manager is lovely and so helpful.
We liked Antonio's on the Town Square - fabulous Tapas - and we also liked La Puenta which has a terrace at the back looking out over the hills.
We’re already planning a return visit.
Hope you are both well.
With very best wishes
Lyn and Mike

We are back in Scotland (boo hoo) after an absolutely truly wonderful 2 week stay at your beautiful home. We just wanted to say thank you. We loved the house, garden, pool and village so much that it was hard to drag ourselves away to explore the area. We did however get out and about and had a great time. Everything was totally perfect - thanks.

We were there in the wettest period since 40 years...
The house was a very cosy and roamantic place.
We missed of course the possibility to enjoy the beautiful garden, but we couldn't have a better place to be with these weather circumstances.
The caretakers were very friendly and helpful.
I hope to come back some time.
