Gaucin and the valley of the Genal river are in the Serrania de Ronda, Andalucia, an outstandingly scenic area of mountains and river valleys. It is an area of white villages, often crowned with Moorish castles To the North, beyond Ronda the peaks give way to rolling countryside while to the South the mountains run almost to the seashore . The main road south from Gaucin reaches Algeciras, where a short ferry ride to Morocco is an easy day trip. From Algeciras the coast road climbs the headland marking the beginning of the Atlantic coast, wide sandy beaches quite different from the Mediterranean. The quickest way to the coast is via Manilva or Casares to Estepona, a pleasant town still with it´s fishing fleet and market. The area is well wooded with cork oaks, mountain pines and eucalyptus. There are any number of scenic walks and drives, some more adventurous than others. Hosts, Paul and Dawn have lived in Andalucia for many years and have a wealth of knowledge about the area.
