Mill Cottage is an eight minute drive from both Casabermeja and Villanueva de la Concepcion. These are traditional small Andalucian towns. They have shops, small supermarkets, banks, chemists and medical centres. Typical Spanish bars offer excellent tapas and the restaurants have good quality meat and fish dishes including Spanish specialities such as paella and migas. Villanueva has its annual feria in August with music, dancing and food and craft stalls and Casabermeja has a famous flamenco festival in July. The house is a 20 minute walk from Arroyo Coche, which has a small bar/restaurant, a village store and a baker. The Torcal Natural Park, famous for its wonderful limestone scenery and spectacular views, and the Mountains of Malaga are both close by. You can also drive to El Chorro and the Guadalhorce lake district. These are lovely areas for walking, bird watching and swimming. The lake at Fuente de Piedra is a famous site for watching large numbers of flamingos.
Beyond El Torcal, Antequera is a thirty minute drive from the house. It has churches, convents and historic buildings, a castle and ancient dolmens. There are tours of Antequera available including a lively tour of the restored Moorish castle. It has several supermarkets and all types of restaurants including one in the bull ring. Malaga, a lively resort, is nearby. It, too, has historic sites from the Roman period onwards including the Gibralfaro Castle and the Alcazaba, a fine bullring which is also used as a concert venue, excellent tapas bars, restaurants, some by the beach, cinemas and good shopping centres. Among the many galleries and museums are the famous Picasso Museum and the Carmen Thyssen Gallery. You can lose yourselves in the lanes of the old city around the Cathedral and enjoy a tapa or a drink while you get your bearings. You can also tour in a horse and cart or an open top bus.
The beaches of the Costa del Sol are a half hour drive away. Here you will find waterparks, funfairs, zoos and a crocodile park. Granada, with its world famous Alhambra Palace, is a little over an hour away as is the magnificent Mesquita in Cordoba. Good road links mean that Seville, Ronda and Marbella are also within reach. There are also bus and train links to these cities from Malaga and Antequera. Other attractions include old hilltop villages, beautiful mountain scenery and botanical gardens.
