Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday villa in Begur
4/5 bedrooms: 3 bathrooms: sleeps 10. Broadband/ADSL connection for your laptop

This beautiful stone villa is in the centre of Peratallada, one of Catalonia's most prized and celebrated villages with its annual music, culinary and artistic festivals. The house has a lawned garden with a small private pool (4.5m by 3m) and a shaded outdoor dining area. Inside, the large rooms have fascinating historical features, such as an ancient bread oven, and an underground cistern for storing grain. There are 4 bedrooms; 3 with large double beds and one with twin beds. There's a stylish bathroom on each floor, a modern kitchen, a huge living/dining room with stone fireplace and large TV room with a double sofabed. The village has several restaurants, some very highly rated and well known, and others offering good value, quality, traditional Catalan food. The house enables you to enjoy the Catalan atmosphere with its history, culture and entertainment while also providing an ideal situation to access lovely local beaches 6 miles away. Water sports including sailing, snorkelling and diving, are particularly good in this area. Gerona (Spain's 'other Barcelona') is just 30 minutes drive, as is Figueres, where you can visit the fascinating Dali museum. The house is ideally situated for holidays all year round.

Baix Emporda, the area around Peratallada, is a region of great environmental interest with national parkland immediately to the west (Gavarres Massif) and to the north towards the coastal town of L'Escala. The Roman archaeological site at Empuries is a national treasure. It's really worth resisting the beaches on a couple of days of your holiday to explore the surrounding places of interest. For gardeners, a MUST is the Cap Roeg Botanical gardens where you'll see the most important flora of the Mediterranean. And in July and August they have a jazz festival in a superb outdoor setting overlooking the sea.

Golf: The area is excellent for golf, with several courses within 20-30 minutes. Emporda, with 27 holes and a swimming pool for non-golfers, and Pals are nearby and very good. Serres de Pals is rather new and not yet mature. Golf Costa Brava at Santa Christina D'Aro (30 min) has dramatic views and is testing in golf and physical terms with many climbs and descents. The best course, though a little further afield, is the PGA Golf Club de Catalunya, a championship course but worth the trip. Located on the N11 between Girona and Barcelona at Caldes de Malavella (45 min).

Swimming/ diving/ sailing/ walking: You'll find an excellent selection of beaches all along the coast right down to Palamos.

Our nearest small beaches and pretty bays are:

Sa Riera,

Sa Tuna,

Aguafreda,

Aguablava,

Fornells,

Tamariu and

Aigua-Xelida

Our nearest large beach is close by at Playa de Pals which has a hugh sandy stretch of more than a mile.

There are diving schools at Fornells, Aguafreda and Begur if you want to do scuba diving. Good snorkelling is found all along this stretch of coast as the water is clear and the sea life thrives.

There are many additional sports/leisure activities available in the area, and very good walking with well signed paths.

Sailing and motor boats can be hired from several boatyards. Our agency has a list of phone numbers and will make a booking for you if you ask.

The village is in an area of exceptional beauty with forest, mountains, historic villages and an unspoilt coastline. This area has escaped the high rise developments of southern Spain. Well-maintained coastal paths link the local small sheltered beaches and bays providing some stunning sea views. A huge sandy beach at Playa de Pals has excellent windsurfing. Nearby towns such as Begur, Palafrugell, Torroella de Montgri and La Bisbal have thriving markets for food, crafts and pottery. You can take a boat to the protected Iles Medes - a perfect environment for varied species of fish and bird life. Gerona has a wonderful old town centre - a photographer's delight. It's stylish, yet still provides excellent value in the restaurants and shops. Peratallada is well known for its restaurants and it's an easy walk to all of them in the village to enjoy local specialities and leisurely outdoor eating. There are music, art and dance festivals in the summer months and wine festivals in the autumn.

A lovely place to stay.

Review Submitted: 27 August 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
We stayed in this lovely old house in the middle of Peratallada for one week in July 2009. We were a party of 8 adults and our ages ranged from 26 to 75 years old, and we all really enjoyed it.

The description of the property is accurate and can be relied on, although it doesn't mention that the old walls are home to many small birds who provide constant amusement to those sitting by the pool.

The beds were comfy and the bed linen and towels of a good quality. The house was clean and well presented. The kitchen facilities are excellent and all 8 of us really could sit in comfort and enjoy our meals in the pleasant dining area. The glasses, crockery and cutlery were all more than adequate. (We didn't use the BBQ or eat in the garden so I can't comment on this experience.)

The village is full of restaurants so there is no need to cook if you don't want to and no need to drive in the evenings. We tried 3 restaurants and they were all good.

The pool is small but perfectly adequate for a cooling dip.
There is plenty to explore in the area near the villa and Gerona and Barcelona can both be visited on day trips. A car is essential for this holiday home. Leaving it in the village car park was not a problem although paying the small fee did depend on which attendant was there.

The equipment - dishwashers, washing machine etc were all of a high standard and there is a really good 'sheila maid' for drying.

Choosing a house for a family group is always quite a responsibility but I really did feel that this time I had struck gold. I have received no adverse comments from my son and daughter and they would not hold back! I think however that 10 adults would be too many.

Of course there are niggles although the main one is beyond the owner's control. We wished that there had been a nice bakery in the village and found it tedious to have to leave the village to shop as we really were happy to sit in the lovely little garden, although the garden furniture is not up to the quality of the rest of the house and was our main disappointment.

If you want to stay in a lovely old house in the middle of a beautiful old village yet within easy reach of cities and beaches, I can recommend Peratallada.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Girls Getaway, Families with Young Children
Owner's Response: We're glad Sandra and family - all with such different ages- enjoyed themselves so much. Peratallada really seems to charm people of all generations.

We've had 10 people at the house frequently and if two don't mind sleeping in the downstairs living room on a bed-settee (with a large TV on the wall opposite which teenagers particularly seem to enjoy!) it works pretty well.

The birds nesting in the outside stone walls are fun to watch as you sit in the garden and the area around has great bird-life for more serious bird-watchers.

We'll review the comfort of the garden furniture on our next visit and make some changes - thanks for letting us know.

Peratallada in May 2013

Review Submitted: 20 May 2013 Date of Stay: May 2013
East Mids to Barcelona then just 2 hours easy motoring to pick up the keys - the girls took us to the door and made sure we were settled in.WOW! must try harder with my lottery numbers.Superb house just(better)as described.Mind the low doorway on the way to the bedrooms(Ouch!)Nice bedrooms - if a bit rustic - superb kitchen with lots of crockery etc - great seating areas and quaint little garden. For sure the Costa Brava I went to before was not this one, this area is more like Italy.Although the weather was changable we did wonderful costal walks, visited Gerona, hilltop villages and the stunning gardens at Cap Roig.
In May the village is very quiet and although it is not a problem to find a resturant during the week they are not very full(empty)
Other people have mentioned the lack of a little shop and next time we will be more organised and do a bigger shop on day one, but unfortunately bread will have to be got every day.
A welcome pack would be nice but -
All in all, 5 stars, and no doubt - we will be back!

Paradise in Peratallada

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 05 May 2013 Date of Stay: April 2013
I had high expectations for my stay at this beautiful property, and they were all exceeded. Five stars! The location of this house is just perfect. Looking out of the windows you would think you were in the transported back to the middle ages. No worries though....all the amenities of modern life are included. There were 6 of us during our stay and we never felt at all crowded. I would not hesitate to have 8......10 might be "cozy" though......just depends on "the chemistry". :)

Although you could spend the entire week relaxing in the garden and exploring the local area... it is nice to have a car and be able to go to the coast. We actually drove up to Carcassone, France as a day trip. (I highly recommend this.)

Chris and Howard were really great to work with. Renting a house overseas can be very stressful. Between Chris and her Agency in Begur, we were very well cared for throughout the entire process. They made it easy. Mariana, in particular was very helpful. We will definitely be back. I highly recommend this property.

A week in Peratallada to remember

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 29 September 2012 Date of Stay: September 2012
We stayed in Peratallada for a week this September as a group of 6 people, which this house easily accommodated.

The village of Peratallada itself does not have a shop which is a bit inconvenient, e.g. re water and milk and essentials. So we would advise stocking up on the way, especially if arriving later in the evening. The property was quaint yet with all necessary modern amenities, and felt very homely. In this regard, the excellent collection of books in the house was a particular and welcome surprise. The pool is small but great for a cooling dip after the hot Catalan sun. Beaches and shops are within easy access but a car is 100% essential, something we were told in advance and is definitely the case. Some of the more quaint beaches and coves are off the beaten track and are well worth exploring - we did a beach and cove trail one day, and found it fun and diverse!. Snorkelling in l'Estartit was another highlight for some of our group. We had a very varied week overall, with Roman ruins, beaches, country walks, ancient villages and museums all within easy reach, making for a very varied holiday - which is great with a diverse group of people. The restaurants in the village are lovely; the bar/pub scene is however quiet with only one restaurant also serving as a pub - in the lovely village square. Possibly our nicest day trip was a drive to Cadaques, which is via a tortuous mountain road not for the faint hearted but very rewarding! In fact, I would strongly advise using a map with contours, as these are not included on many local tourist maps, and you can end up on a challenging road if you are not careful - we did one late eveing! Overall, we would heartily recommend this house given its lovely setting, furnishings, fittings and overall charm. Lots of steps over 3 floors for older or less mobile people would be the only point that could be difficult for some - this was not a problem for us however. A great holiday and many great memories!

fairytale fortified tiny town in northwest Spain

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 07 August 2012 Date of Stay: July 2012
Peretadella is one of the small walled towns in the region and beautifully preserved and peaceful with no traffic allowed. The house is on a cobbled street by an ancient arch and is itself very old with 3 foot thick walls. It has been beautifully renovated, has a cook's kitchen, lovely bathrooms, comfortable beds, plenty of living space, satellite TV for watching the Olympics currently on and lots of nooks and crannies for hide and seek. And the pool in the garden is a joy and wonderful for the kids to play in whilst adults relax by the barbecue.
The region has many beaches (crowded in August - typical for Spain) and wonderful inland country for walking, cycling, driving. We particularly enjoyed the 2 homes we went to which Dali had lived in at Cadaques and Pubol.
Peretadella has more restaurants than we have every seen per acre that attract Spanish locals and tourists so there is always a lively bustle on the streets in the evenings. It also has a couple of good icecream shops and an outside bar in which to while away the evening.
Chris was prompt and entirely helpful via email. I would recommend the house very highly; it would suit both a group with adults and children and a group with only adults. And there is a 5th and comfortable sofa bed to be had in the downstairs TV room.
