Altea, on Spain’s celebrated Costa Blanca is a region with much to boast about. The area is blessed with fine sandy sweeping Mediterranean beaches, striking hills for walking and riding, and resorts of all description from the lively Benidorm to the traditional Altea, to the secluded coves and bays of the Calpe coast, and a selection of Altea properties to suit all tastes and needs.
The town of Altea originated as a fishing village, and I am pleased to say that despite the increase in tourism and development, the town has certainly not been ruined by huge apartment blocks or massive hotels. The town still relies on private Altea properties and self catering villas to house visitors. The best place to explore this quiet Costa Blanca town is the plaza, situated on a high spot overlooking the coast. Markets erupt in the evenings, when many are out having a meal or relaxing drink.
Benidorm is a more lively resort. With four miles of golden beaches and a huge range of entertainment and pubs, Benidorm is on of Britain’s favourite holiday destinations. There are theme parks, extensive shopping and great facilities for children, as well as a huge range of Altea properties, from self catering villas to town houses. Benidorm is also the main departure point for many of the regions fabulous day trips, excursions and adventure rides.
Close to Benidorm lies the unique town of Finestrat. It is a charming old village, which is not only a small mountain village, but also a beach resort!
The villages surrounding Altea should not be ignored on an Altea holiday. The village of La Nucia with its Sunday market is especially worth seeing.
As with much of the Costa Blanca, there is a huge amount to entertain on an Altea holiday or stay in any self catering holiday villa in Altea. The Mediterranean offers spectacular sailing, fishing, scuba diving, windsurfing and safe swimming, and equipment can be hired and lessons bought along the beach along the front of the town of Altea and most major tourist beaches.
The Costa Blanca is a golfing haven, with a huge number of courses catering for all levels of ability and experience. There are pitch and putt golf courses, miniature golf and crazy golf too if you are not looking for a full 18 holes!
The Altea region has scorching summers, up to 40°C during the day, which results in the sea and beaches being a blissful place to relax. Many of the Altea holiday villas have pools, as the summer is long and hot. Winters are extremely mild, with temperatures rarely dropping below 10°C.
Altea is 60km from Alicante-El Altet (ALC), which receives daily flights from 24 UK airports on a variety of providers. The best way to find a cheap flight to Altea is to check offers and deals from all the major airlines including British Airways, easyJet and Ryanair.
