The 20,600 acre Smith Mountain Lake has 500 miles of shoreline offers a large number of fantastic activities. The shoreline offers wonderful views of the mountains and is best explored by hiking. There are some excellent golf courses for holidaymakers to choose from in the area including 18 holes at Mariner’s Landing, Sycamore Ridge and The Westlake as well as a few miniature golf courses. Other popular activities here include climbing, scenic driving and horseback riding. Visitors will find lots of excellent restaurants and bars serving a wide variety of dishes in the area. Holidaymakers will find so many wonderful places to visit in the area including the Smith Mountain Lake State Park and Franklin County’s Smith Mountain Lake Park. The Smith Mountain Dam Visitor’s Centre is popular with visitors, who enjoy the exhibits and audio-visual presentations. An interesting site well worth a visit is the Booker T. Washington National Monument, which includes preserved plantation buildings, slave quarters and other buildings from the 19th century. The weather is hottest in June, July and August with average air temperatures of about 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The coldest time of the year is January when the average air temperature is 56 degrees Fahrenheit. Officially the hurricane season extends from June to November, but years may pass without this area being impacted by hurricanes. Rainfall is spread fairly evenly throughout the year with the wettest months usually August and September with 6 to 6.5 inches per month.
Roanoke Regional Airport (ROA) is just over an hour’s drive from the Smith Mountain Lake Area. Flights arrive here from a few major U.S airports including Atlanta (ATL), Charlotte (CLT), New York-LaGuardia (LGA) and Philadelphia (PHL) amongst others. Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, and National/Alamo are car rental firms located on the first floor of the airport terminal. Overseas visitors can fly to Charlotte International Airport (CLT) and get a connecting flight to Asheville Area. Flights arrive at Charlotte from Frankfurt (FRA), London-Gatwick (LGW), Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Rome-Fiumicino (FCO) as well as many major U.S airports.
