This spacious villa is situated in its own private grounds of about 12 acres. A magical spot that has all amenities within a few minutes drive and only about 20 minutes from the popular resorts of Alvor, Portimao and Praia da Rocha and is just south of the enchanting spa village of Caldas de Monchique. The grounds include the gardens by the villa, plenty of parking, woodland and riverside paths, old citrus groves and forest walks beyond.

It is in a very idyllic and secluded spot with practically the whole view of the surrounding hills and countryside within the villas own land. It is easy to imagine you are miles away from anywhere and anyone, yet it is not at all remote. Only 200 yards away there are two good restaurants and within walking distance there is another restaurant and two pottery shops.

Outside or by the pool on a clear night stars twinkle so brightly in the dark sky it is almost like a firework display and if you have some binoculars you will see some of the true beauty of the heavens.

The villa has 4 bedrooms, 2 with en-suite facilities and two sharing a spacious bathroom between them. There is another bathroom on the ground floor which has a very fancy shower enclosure with lots of hydrotherapy jets and a radio. Three of the bedrooms have balconies one of these being very large. Downstairs, the living room is a huge open plan room with sofas and armchairs for up to 10 people, a wood burning stove for winter and a satellite TV. French doors lead outside to a patio and the garden. There is a separate dining room which is light and airy and with French doors to another patio and the pool area beyond. The large fully fitted Kitchen also has a door to the same patio and parking area. It has marble worktops, an electric oven and hob, Fridge freezer, dishwasher etc. There is a laundry room off the kitchen with the washing machine, ironing board and the maids equipment.

If you enjoy walking, footpaths lead from the property through the mimosa trees and riverside to the forest covered hills beyond where connecting trails cover the whole Monchique eco zone.

About 20 minutes drive takes you to the beaches at Praia da Rocha and Alvor and a similar distance from several golf courses, plus the Morgado Golf courses are only about 12km away. Less than 30 minutes will take you to many other beautiful beaches between Carvoeiro, Ferragudo, and Lagos or if motor sports interest you, there is the huge new international autodrome where there is motor racing at all levels as well as motor bike racing and all sizes of go-karts.

For shopping, the large fishing port of Portimao is only about 15 minutes away and it has the superb new, Aqua shopping mall with plenty of free parking and a food court on the rook terrace where there is free WiFi and evening entertainment, even if you do not buy anything from the cafes. Otherwise, you can explore the narrow streets of the old town or relax at a bar or coffee shop on the historic waterfront. Buses stop by the villa gates for Monchique or to Portimao, but a car makes it far easier if you really want to explore this wonderful part of the Algarve.

We have lived in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight (UK) most of our lives. We have a son, Chris who was born the same year as Quinta da Mimosa was being built for us and his earliest holidays were spent there.

Alan Philpott purchased this villa in 1993

In the late 1980's, together with Alan's mother the couple discovered this idyllic piece of the Algarve countryside set amid beautiful Mimosa trees and with an ancient ruined farmhouse. In those days, foreigners were not allowed to own much more than an acre of land in Portugal, so the only way they could purchase this old farm was to set up a Portuguese company (Quinta Mimosa S.I. Lda.) of which the family are the only shareholders.

The old farmhouse turned out to be beyond repair so Alan set out to design a new house to be built nearby, leaving the ruin as a feature in the garden. His sketches were made into working plans by a local architect and engineer and builders commenced work on the site in 1992. The house was completed in 1993.

Quinta da Mimosa is still the family's holiday home and they make it available for others to enjoy when they are not using it themselves.

Quinta da Mimosa is located in such a beautiful part of the Algarve countryside. It is an almost magical spot, set among the mimosa trees, with the small river babbling its way through the hillside on its journey down to the coast.

In the house or by the pool it is so secluded you can imagine you are miles and miles from civilization and in a world of your own, yet only 200 yards away are nice restaurants in the hamlets of Pocigais and Baraccao.

Virtually all the forested hillside within your view belongs to the villa and it is within the area of outstanding natural beauty, the protected Algarve Eco zone. As well as the mimosas, there are old orange and lemon trees, olives, cork oaks and the pretty Arbutus trees whose strawberry like fruits are used to make the strong 'moonshine' like spirit known as Medronho that is loved by the locals.

Sitting on the patio on a clear night, the stars sparkle so brilliantly you could be watching a firework display (even more so if you have too much medronho).

The house was designed to be and is, spacious and airy. Driving from the motorway the 12 km of winding road gives the illusion of being up in the mountains but it is only about 350 feet above sea level in the picturesque foothills. It is just high enough to benefit from slightly cooler air in the scorching summers, but not so high as to suffer from cold mountain air.

The house will accommodate more people but it is ideal for 8 or 9 who have plenty of space to spread out and not be under one another's feet.

This recent trip was the third time we have stayed at this Villa. We must like it! The villa and pool & pool area were super clean. The overall lay of the Villa is practical, easy to entertain in several areas - poolside, dining, living. Three of the bedrooms have balconies, which added the extra bit of privacy. The location of the Villa is private, no nosy neighbours, but just at the end of the drive way are two good restaurants, and minutes away, other restaurants and not much further is the city of Monchique. We tried the resorts, but after trying the Villa, we haven't gone back to resort style vacations. This villa is highly recommended.

We have just returned from the delightful villa, Quinta da Mimosa, having had a wonderful holiday there. It is quite a special place and we have been able to relax and recoup ready for another busy year ahead. This beautiful and spacious villa will be a lovely place to remember when we need a chance to catch a moment to think.

I will certainly miss the daily swims in the pool and the timeless moments by the stream, waiting for the kingfisher and/or water vole to appear meanwhile watching the damselflies and frogs and listening to the exotic sounding birds.

he kids enjoyed it too, even without the use of computers... It was a great location and much more convenient to reach our favourite beaches along the west coast.

I must say that the maid was very helpful too and kept a very clean and tidy villa for us.

The village of Caldas de Monchique is only a short distance up the hill from the villa and is well know for it spa water and treatments which you cant partake of. it is also famous as a very special beauty spot with some nice walks connect to the forest paths which adjoin Quinta da Mimosa. There are some good but quite expensive restaurants in the village square so it pays to use the ones nearer to the villa. Just before you get to Caldas there is the new international Longevity Spa resort/hotel which was built in this location because of the beauty of the area and the clean mountain air.. An attraction nearby is the Parque da Minha which is about country life with an old farmhouse, iron ore mine, distillery and other interesting things.

The villa is situated in the beautiful foothills of the Monchique Mountains range, but is only about 350 feet above sea level and although very secluded it is not at all remote and there are lots of restaurants and cafes within a short distance.

Other Activities: Lounging by the pool, barbecues, swimming, Bird watching, Country walks and all number of water sports within a few miles. Also the Autodromo of the Algarve where you can try anything from go-carts to full size racing cars. This is about 30 minutes drive away

Golf: The Morgado do Reguengo Golf Course only about 12 kilometres from the villa and is claiming to be one of the Algarves best golf courses. Several other excellent courses are within about 30 minutes drive from the villa.

  • The sleeping arrangements are ideal for up to 8 adults or 9 if using the roll-away bed plus a baby in a cot. We can arrange an extra cot if required. The master bedroom has a large double bed and it has an en-suite bathroom and a small balcony. Bedroom 2 is a double and it has a huge balcony overlooking the pool. Bedroom 3 is a twin bedded room with a small balcony looking towards the hills. Bedroom 4 is at the top of the house and is nearly circular. It has an en-suite shower room.

Notes:
The maid comes in 4 /5 mornings per week. The washing machine is situated in her closet. There are 6 sunbeds by the pool. There is not any air conditioning, but this is a large airy house and there are ceiling fans in most rooms. We have never found the need for air condition here as it is 350 feet above sea level and normally just a little cooler in summer, but not high enough to be cold. Winter evenings can be quite cool and there is a wood burner in the living room and numerous electric heaters around the house for that time of year.
