Southeast Michigan is home to much of the state’s industry and population, particularly around the city of Detroit. Beyond the city, which has a long history in car manufacturing, Southeast Michigan is mainly agricultural and borders Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes.

Further afield, the city of Dearborn offers a living history experience with a recreated old town complete with Ford Model T, a huge car collection for nostalgic browsing and tours of the Rouge Factory which still produces Ford trucks. The state has many excellent wineries and visitors can follow the wine trails, tour the vineyards and sample wines along the way. There are many antiques shops and fairs for those interested in collecting memorabilia.World class music and art festivals are another attraction to this interesting region. Golfing, fishing and hiking all feature high, particularly around Jackson.
Car lovers staying in a guest house or lakefront home in Southeast Michigan will want to pay a visit to the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn which has a 40-year history. The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn offers an insight into the life and works of this remarkable inventor. For families, a day out at the Detroit Zoo is hard to beat with its 70-foot long Polar Passage taking visitors to see the polar bears at close quarters. The State Capitol building in Lansing with its glass floor rotunda and 9-acres of hand painted walls and ceilings is quite a spectacle and guided tours are available every weekday.
Southeast Michigan has hot sunny summers with some showers and very cold winters influenced by the lake effect of the Great Lakes. In summer, temperatures average 28°C (82°F) and gradually fall to below freezing for most of the winter from late November to early March. It has 7-10 days of rain every month which falls as snow in the winter. Spring and autumn can be very pleasant times to visit this area and enjoy the autumn colour on the trees and the many opportunities for outdoor activities.
The nearest airport serving holiday rentals in Southeast Michigan is Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County (DTW) Airport which is 23 miles southwest of the city. The Capital Region International (LAN) Airport at Lansing also has domestic flights with Allegiant Air, Delta Connection, United Express and Sun Country Airlines to other major hubs in the USA, making it easy to reach Southeast Michigan by air. A car is recommended for those staying outside the main cities.
