Alghero has so much to offer the visitor with unspoilt stretches of white sandy beaches and clear waters which at present remain relatively uncrowded apart from in the peak season. There are opportunities to try your hand at several water sports.Alghero is still a flourishing fishing port hence the abundance of fresh fish on the menus. Lobster is a local speciality! Sardinian cuisine is about fresh ingredients, simply prepared and complimented by the highly rated local cannonau wine. There are lots of fantastic restaurants and bars in the area. One can get lost meandering through the narrow cobbled streets. Two hundred kilometres from the Italian mainland and about the same from North Africa, Sardinia sits in the middle of the Mediterranean, which has meant that throughout its history it has been invaded by various civilisations; Romans, Genoans, Carthiginians and most recently the Catalonians. The people in Alghero speak an ancient form of Catalan and the town is known as 'Barcelonetta'.

Notes: As everything is to hand it is not necessary to have a car but if you want a car to explore some of the wonderful beaches and scenery further afield, please note it is only possible to park in designated areas outside the old town as the old town is a restricted traffic zone. There is a very free large car park at the port which is a 5 minute walk away from the flat. Alghero can be quite busy during the months of July and August as these are the months Italians tend to holiday in.

Lovely apartment in the old town

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 23 April 2011 Date of Stay: April 2011
I visited Alghero many years ago, staying in the new town. I returned with friends at Easter and thought how much nicer it would be to stay in the old town, with its historic character and ideal location. I wasn't disappointed. Antonia and Roy's apartment was ideal, with all the necessary facilities, including iron and washing machine to catch up on some washing we had accumulated earlier in our trip. The kitchen is well stocked and there are some dvds and cds if you want to spend a night in. There are plenty of places to eat and drink but it is also nice to have the option to self cater. The apartment is spacious and well laid out. The rooms are cool, which I imagine in summer is welcome, although at easter was not so necessary; however, once the windows and shutters are open there is ample light. The furnishings are a little old fashioned for my taste but in a fairly neutral way, which means that they don't offend, and in any case are consistent with the "old town" atmosphere of the place. As mentioned elsewhere the double room has a huge comfortable bed. The only comparable bed that I have slept on, size wise, was in an old palace in Rajasthan, so it helped to conjure up some happy memories. There was a small leak in the bathroom which I texted Antonia about and she had it fixed the same day while we were out and about. It didn't spoil our holiday at all. All in all I would recommend the apartment for anyone who wishes to make Alghero their base for a holiday in one of the loveliest islands (if not the loveliest) in the mediterranean.

First visit in Alghero

Review Submitted: 15 July 2012 Date of Stay: June 2012
Ideal placed in the historic center and our base ( 2 adults and 3 teenagers) for 6 days in Alghero. The flat is very well equiped and we felt very much " at home " . We especially enjoyed the town and the locals! Tey seem so nice, varm, open and talkative. We did most of our cooking at the flat with no problems. The town has lots of small shops and markets near by....we would also like to recommend the jewrelly " Il talismano" they have cheap handcrafted quality and are so nice....

Last by most important... thanks to Antonia ( the owner ) for her concern and the good correspondence! and to Gordon ( the manager in Alghero)

Had a fantastic time here! 2 adults and 2 children

Review Submitted: 30 May 2012 Date of Stay: August 2011
Had a fantastic time here. It was our first trip to Sardinia and we have loved it. Over the week we went to 4 different restaurants/pizzerias. I highly recommend El Pultal on Via Columbano. It's a great pizza restaurant and the staff are lovely. It's reasonably priced and the pizzas are amazing. We have all had a really good time and hope to be back soon.
The flat was beautifully furnished and had everything we needed. Thanks to Antonia and Roy for all the tips and guidance with the flat and the local area, especially with the parking and the restaurants.

Honeymoon Couple!

Review Submitted: 30 May 2012 Date of Stay: September 2011
Such a great apartment! As city dwellers in Dublin this place really felt like a home from home. We will recommend it to everyone who'll listen and we'll hopefully be back.
FIRST RECOMMENDATION!
The Andrea Jensen boat trip. This is the top attraction for Alghero on trip advisor and really lives up to it. We both had an amazing day: great company, great weather, so relaxed. The crew have loads to talk about and pleanty in store to make it more than just a regular boat trip: swimming, speedboat rides, FANTASTIC LUNCH!
SECOND RECOMMENDATION
Ok, so we coulodn't afgree what order to put them in so we're recommending all three as great, cosy restaurants, all with good seafood, pasta and desserts: El Pultal, Maristella and Paco. Definitely get "seadas" for dessert at least once.
THIRD RECOMMENDATION
Andreini, the restaurant downstairs. It's top end and very expensive but the staff are lovely and very attentive. A snooty somelier, but it would be disappointing if he wasn't!!! Have rarely eaten food so good. About €70 per head.
FINAL RECOMMENDATION
Porto Conte! It's €2.50 return on the bus which leaves from the Public Gardens and takes about half an hour. Very quiet after August. So if you want a very peaceful day by the sea you can nab a small bit of beach and not be bothered by anyone all day. Bring food though as other than hotels there's nothing else there.

Hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did ours.

Lovely, relaxing apartment in beautiful old town, which is very romantic and full of lovely shops, bars and restuarants. No beaches nearby but we hired a car and found some gems. Quite noisy at night but as no one goes to bed very early, doesn't really matter. Friendly, helpful owners. Would recommend.
