Wendland self-catering holiday accommodation is set at the far eastern boundary of the northern German state of Lower Saxony. It covers the area known as Lüchow-Dannenberg and is made up mostly of rolling hills and riverfront forest along the famous River Elbe.
Wendland holiday rentals are ideal for anyone in search of some rural seclusion in a region that offers fantastic countryside walks. The Elbe is particularly attractive here, and, together with its tributaries, is a very popular route for cyclists to follow – along the way you’ll encounter fantastic rural landscapes and a number of attractive old towns and villages.
Lüchow is found in the district around Wendland self-catering accommodation – it sits on a tributary of the Elbe and offers a number of interesting sights, including the half-timbered old town hall and the remnants of the town’s Schloss, of which only a tower, the Armsturm still stands today. To the south is Salzwedel, another picturesque old town, known for its half-timbered buildings. In fact, such is the concentration of timber-framed structures here, that it’s on the Timber-Frame Road that runs roughly from the north to the south of Germany.
Dannenberg is easily reached from Wendland holiday rentals and is also on the German Timber-Frame Road. Particularly attractive here is the old city hall, as well as the narrow streets of the town, most of which are lined with beautiful half-timbered houses.
Another great destination for a day trip from a Wendland holiday home would be Uelzen – as with much of the region, it is noted for its half-timbered buildings, but also boasts a number of important examples of German brick Gothic architecture. The pedestrianised centre here is well worth exploring and is where much of the history can be found.
