The region of Saxony-Anhlat is in the central north east of Germany and is one of 16 member states. It was formerly part of the Federal state of East Germany. The capital of the region is the beautiful town of Magdeburg. This scenic area is due in part to its location on the banks of the Elbe and Saale rivers and is at the heart of German history. The Reformation began at Wittenberg where Martin Luther taught at the university. Saxony-Anhalt includes the Harz Mountains and the Saale-Unstut region to the southeast of the mountains is dotted with castles. Further north are the fertile Magdeburger Börde and the Altmark heathlands.
