Hesse, or Hessen, is a state in western central Germany covering 21,000 km ². The capital of the region is Wiesbaden but perhaps the best-known city is Frankfurt. Hesse has hot summers and cold winters, like much of Germany. In July and August, daytime highs average 24°C (75°F) but from December through February temperatures struggle to remain above freezing. The area has 4-5cm of rainfall every month which falls as snow in winter.
The main international airport serving holiday rentals in Hesse is Frankfurt (FRA) Airport, located 12km (8 miles) southwest of the city. Cheap flights with Ryanair arrive at the Frankfurt Hahn (HHN) Airport which is 120km (75 miles) west of Frankfurt. Flights from London to Frankfurt take about 90 minutes and flights from New York take 7 hours 15 minutes.
