Holidaymakers looking for an exciting and scenic part of Germany should pay a visit to the Ore Mountains. Located in the eastern side of Germany on the border with the Czech Republic, holidaymakers will find great enjoyment through the wide array of activities offered in the Ore Mountains. Visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas, apartments and chalets.
The Ore Mountains are a great area to visit, especially in the winter with alpine skiing and cross country skiing offered here. Near Altenberg is a famous bob and sledding run. Carlsfeld Fun Park has numerous other activities such as a waterpark, swimming, bowling, rock climbing and miniature golf amongst other things. The summer months offer some wonderful walks with several marked routes as well as Nordic walking, mountain biking and horseback riding. There are a couple of golf courses within a 40 kilometre radius of the mountains including Golf Club Zwickau Reinsdorf. There are several bars, cafes and restaurants in the towns and villages here with a variety of cuisine including good German fare. The towns in the Ore Mountain area have a few arts and crafts shops as well as markets selling fresh produce. Self catering holidaymakers will be able to buy food and drink in the towns at small stores and markets.
There are a number of interesting places and old mining towns to visit in the region with historic buildings and museums. The town of Freiberg has a wonderful cathedral as well as mining museums. In December the area has numerous exciting Christmas related events and markets. Annaberg-Buchholz is another small town in the area with a beautiful church and a museum. As well as offering wonderful views, the area has various parks and gardens well worth visiting such as the botanical garden in Schellerhau. The city of Dresden can be accessed from Altenberg by train or bus and is less than an hour away. There are many fantastic places to visit in the city including Dresden Castle and Zwinger Palace. Excursions to the Czech Republic are also available including day trips to Karlovy Vary.
The warmest time of the year in this part of Germany is July and August when the average high temperature is 24 degrees centigrade. Winters are cold with January averaging just 2 degrees centigrade during the day and -3 at night although this can be much colder higher up in the mountains with snow quite plentiful. July is also the wettest month with an average of 83mm.
Dresden Airport (DRS) has flights to and from various cities including Cologne/Bonn, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, London, Monastir, Moscow, Munich, Vienna and Zurich. ADAC, Avis, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt are car rental firms located at the arrivals level in the airport terminal.
