Outside the ski season, summer hiking is also very popular with a number of trails guiding hikers to some magnificent views. The lakes and rivers allow for various watersports such as kayaking, canoeing, wind-surfing and sailing. Other popular pastimes for visitors in the warmer months are climbing and mountain biking. Holidaymakers can also try paragliding or take tandem flying and thermic flying tours over the mountain peaks from the Garmisch-Partenkirchen airfield. The warmest time to visit this part of Germany is July and August when the maximum high temperature is 24 degrees centigrade, although June is also very warm. The temperature in December, January and February is cold enough to encourage occasional substantial snowfall. Ironically the higher temperatures encourage the most rainfall in the region with June having an average of approximately 105mm rainfall.
