The gîtes are just a short stroll from Mimi's award winning village shop, where you can find all the basics. Our traditional, vine-covered, Charentaise properties with their stone walls and oak beams provide the perfect setting to unwind and enjoy the tranquil pace of village life. In the heart of sunflower country near Cognac, St Jean d'Angély, and the coast, Fontaine Chalendray is a peaceful hilltop village, perfect for a relaxing holiday.

Chez Gabrielle comprising our gîtes Jasmin & Fleur, was fully refurbished to a very high standard in 2007, to provide all the comforts of home, whilst retaining many original features such as oak beams, wooden floors, exposed Charentais stone walls & fireplaces with wood-burning stoves. They are attractively and tastefully decorated, comfortably furnished and very well equipped. Both cottages having dishwasher, washing machine, fridge freezer, gas cooker, extractor, microwave, dining table and chairs, and for entertainment the TV receives SKY free to air channels and French TV, there is also a DVD/CD player. We provide all linens, pool and bath towels on arrival, which are changed weekly. For full details of Jasmin & Fleur please see the individual descriptions.

Set on a hilltop with superb views over the surrounding countryside, Fontaine Chalendray is in the heart of Cognac country. Mimi's shop is a 2 minute stroll away, and a variety of mobile shops selling bread, meats or fish from the coast stop regularly in the village. Alan's home-farm is across the road where fresh eggs, chicken, rabbit (don't tell the kids about that though) and fresh seasonal salads and veggies' can be bought fresh from the ground. We are a 15 min drive from the market towns of Matha and Aulnay, where you will find supermarket shopping, and hypermarket shopping available in Cognac or St Jean d'Angely which is are around a 30 min drive. The Atlantic beaches of Royan,Ile d'Oleron and the chic town of La Rochelle, Futuroscope park at Poitiers, and the chocolate factory at Angouleme are all a pleasant hour's drive away.

Notes

  • A refundable security deposit of £175/200€ is payable with your balance payment, and refunded no later than 2 weeks after your departure. The security deposit is doubled for guest who are bringing pets. Please note the properties are fully cleaned and prepared prior to your arrival by us, please leave the property in a clean condition for the next guests as this will make changeover day easier for us. Leaving the property in a poor state for us will result in a cleaning charge to make it ready for the next guests, this is deducted from your security deposit. Please note, should you find ANY defect with the property or equipment notify us at the time to allow for this to be rectified as quickly as possible.
  • Bed linen's, and bath/pool towel's which are changed weekly, electricity, gas and water are all included for holiday rental rates. Special arrangements apply to long term rentals, and holiday rentals over 3 weeks, and more frequent changes can be requested with an additional charge.
  • A 10% discount for all bookings made for holidays in July 2013, so book now and mention the offer when enquiring!

Dawn, David and Matthew : Just to say thank you for making us all so welcome at Chez Gabrielle. The gite, Jasmin, was just perfect - beautifully finished and so well supplied with everything a family could need on holiday. The surrounding area is lovely and so many places to see that 1 week was not really long enough. We will keep in touch and hope to see you again next summer.
Nuala, Mac and boys: Had a lovely, relaxing holiday in 'Jasmin' in Fontaine - Chalendray. Hosts welcoming, friendly and helpful.
Accommodation comfortable, spacious, clean and well - appointed. Children loved the pool, table - tennis and boules. We loved the countryside for cycling, safe and picturesque. Good memories.
Christine, Rob Em and Rebekah: It was a real pleasure to stay in such a beautiful home, Fleur ( even if only for a fortnight). We will look forward to coming back. Be in touch soon

Disappointing accomodation

We had a two week stay in Fleur and the rest of our party stayed in Jasmine, these comments are based on Fleur.
The area was lovely and had plenty of places to visit. La Rochelle and Cognac are well worth a visit. The village was peaceful and Mimi's shop was very well stocked, it is a shame there is no bar or restuarant in the village.
The house itself was tired and shabby, definately in need of modernisation particularly the lounge seating area. The DVD players did not work the whole time we were there. The cooker rarely worked despite being supposedly fixed. I don't think the gite was as clean as it should have been, there was often a damp smell to the gite, there was also an offensive smell to the en-suite ? from the septic tank. The gardens do not look as well kept as in the photos, the pool area in particular is in need of attention, i.e loose tiles around the pool. The pool itself was freezing and the pool toys were dirty and punctured, it is advisable to take your own.
I also advise asking for an inventory at the start of your visit, as you may be charged for items that were not there in the first place. We had to ask for a change of towels and bed linen despite terms and conditions stating a change after a week.
This is a basic holiday let and after further research there are other properties available in the area at a higher standard for the same amount of money.
Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write this review and to give the extensive feedback contained therein.
We were deeply saddened as we read through it to learn that you felt that our property disappointed you. We take our business very seriously and our attention to our guests needs which is why we state in our Terms and Conditions that guests should immediately report any issues or shortfalls that they have with the accommodation or facilities immediately to our gite manager so that the issue or situation can be rectified and therefore not detract from the enjoyment of our current and indeed future guests’ stay. We understand from our records that you did have an issue with the cooker and this was attended to at the time. However during your stay we have no record of any complaints regarding the DVD player not working, the cleanliness of the accommodation, a damp smell or offensive smell in the en-suite, or dirty or punctured pool toys, or the conditions of the gardens or pool area. Simply if we are not alerted to an issue we cannot rectify it. That said, as we are now aware of the issues that you have mentioned we have taken steps to investigate and remedy as necessary all the points that you have listed. However it is worth noting that no subsequent guests mentioned any of your issues in the 7 weeks after your stay, and prior to your feedback. The pool tiles incidentally were repaired on the day of your departure as our manager had noticed the issue himself. The linen change appears to have been a misunderstanding as you had requested a change of linen on Thursday, which is why you were advised at the time was non-standard and therefore carried a charge, and that the standard inclusive linen change would be at the weekend.
It is saddening that your feedback was only given 7 weeks after your departure and in response to the itemised deposit reduction due to the damage and condition in which you left the property.
