Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday home in Sainte-Marie-du-Mont - Utah Beach Normandy
Beach house, sea views, WW 2 Utah Beach Normandy - perfect for 2 - 10 persons!

Our Beach house with 5 bedrooms & 3 bathrooms is located actually on the world famous WW2 Invasion Beach - Utah Beach.

This house is less than 800 meters, to your right, from the museum yet completely private and tranquil as it is tucked up in the dunes, enjoying elevated views across to Point du Hoc, Grandcamp-Maisy and the Îles Saint-Marcouf then 800 yards on the left is the Beauguillot Nature Reserve/Bird Sanctuary of 1,200 acres from your doorstep.

A path leads from the back gate onto the wide expanse of Utah Beach.

Completely renovated in 2005.

A perfect holiday home with flexibility for rental as a small 2 bed for a couple or as a big house with 5 bedrooms 3 bathrooms...ideal for 2 families sharing, a group of friends or 1 big family, including grandparents, the family dog and loads of kids.

The house an upside down house is designed to maximize the sea views from the living space on the 1st floor, means the house can be used just as a small 2 bedroom ...we do special rates for this!

On the 1st floor there is a large open-plan living room, kitchen and dining areain a brand new purpose built conservatory, here is a large dining table for 10, plus another seating area, leading out to the huge sun terrace with a patio table for 10, a Portuguese BBQ and sun beds.

In the living room is a TV (satellite Freeview programmes include BBC, ITV, Sky News, etc.), DVD player, CD player, big wood burner for the winter (logs included), a well-stocked book case, even jigsaws in case of emergency! Free WIFI throughout the house.

Bedrooms: Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms, (1 double & 1 twin) and the family bathroom with a huge enclosed shower and seperate bath. On the ground floor are 3 bedrooms, 2 Italian shower rooms plus the laundry room. The large double room has an en suite shower room, the 2 twin rooms with a 'Jack & Jill' shower room. Both bedrooms at the front of the house have French windows opening out into the garden.

We have tried to create a very comfortable home-from-home feeling with all the linen, bedding and decorations reflecting a nautical theme. All the beds are made up for your arrival, with towels in the bathrooms. Beach towels, sun bed covers and even a bucket and spade for the kids are provided.

The kitchen is well equipped with a dishwasher, microwave, gas hob & electric oven, kettle, toaster, coffee maker and a large family-sized American fridge/freezer with chilled filtered water & ice on demand.

In the laundry room there are separate washing and drying machines, iron and ironing board.

Actually ON the famous WW2 Invasion Beach Utah Beach house has views across to Point du Hoc & Grandcamp Maisy with Omaha Beach, Arromanches & the Mulberry harbor, Gold, Juno, Sword, plus The American Cemetery all in close proximity 40 minutes away, Pegasus Bridge the furthest point from us is just an hour away, Bayeux is very close by. In the other direction are the beautiful fishing ports of St Vaast La Hougue & Cherbourg. Mont St Michel just over an hour away.

Ste Mere Eglise & Carentan are the 2 closest towns to Utah Beach with plenty supermarkets, shops, tourist attractions including museums and restaurants.

PLUS our Normandy Utah Beach house is set in the heart of The Cotentin and Bessin Marshlands Regional Natural Park which covers 145,000 hectares with 144 villages and towns within this Park in Normandy. Utah Beach is located on the eastern side of the peninsular is set in a significantly important coastal protected area of 12,000 acres with the Beauguillot Nature Reserve/Bird Sanctuary of 1,200 acres 500 meters from our house. The bird watching is incredible especially when the migratory birds pass over.

The area is in stunning countryside and completely different each season. For example in the winter the marshlands flood to create a beautiful watery scenery with the big skies reflected, then in the summer it becomes pasture with cows peacefully grazing. A haven for photographers & those wanting to learn more about photography with the special light here.

The East coast being slightly wilder than the west coast is very unspoilt especially with the government owning vast tracts of the coast line to preserve the natural beauty we are presently under going the transition in to a UNESCO site.

It is possible to have a day out visiting the Channel Islands, Jersey & Guernsey as there are ferries across on a regular daily basis from Granville, Portbail or Barneville Carteret. these ports on the west coast less than an hour away from us.

This area in Normandy is also famous for it’s horses with numerous stud farms and training stables. Trotting Horses are trained everyday on Utah beach, further up the coast is Honfleur, Deauville & Le Harve under 2 hours away and you cross the fabulous Pont du Normandie on the way.

Giverney Monet's garden takes just over 2 hours to get to & is worth a visit.

Lots to do and see: There is something for everyone, bird watchers, beach lovers, gourmets, wine lovers, walkers, bike riders, horse riders, wind surfers, sand yachting, sailing, diving, horse racing, interest in the 2nd world war or just generally exploring…the problem here is that there is too much to do!

Yet in the summer the beach is paradise, miles and miles of golden sands a perfect spot for a peaceful read, a sun bathe or a busy day with the family on the beach, beach combing, shell fish gathering when the tide is out, it's safe to swim and it's not crowded.

With the bird sanctuary just a few hundred meters away we enjoy an amazing number of different species of sea birds and ducks. If it is particularly quiet on the beach you may be able to spot the colony of harbor seals.

Huge mussels and oysters beds right opposite our house destined for the finest restaurants and tables in Paris and other gourmet destinations – it is possible to purchase shellfish direct from the farm shops locally.

Gourmet dining & spectacular sunrises: The house is on the beach – the other houses around are mainly holiday homes so are only opened up 2 weeks of the year – it is an incredibly tranquil and peaceful spot, but not completely isolated...we are also lucky enough to have some splendid restaurants around us, we keep a list in the house & do try them out ourselves!

The museum which is undergoing huge renovation project to be finished for June 2012 attracts in excess of 500,000 visitors per year, however, with our house tucked up in the dunes you won’t be aware of any activity at all! Near the museum is Café Roosevelt.

Half way between Utah Beach and Ste Marie du Mont is a former farm that has been converted into an equestrian center with hotel and a restaurant.

The nearest village 4 kms away, Saint Marie du Mont which has the most beautiful church, 2 boulangeries, mini mart, bars and restaurants. St Vaast La Hougue 20 minutes away is a UNESCO site with the whole harbor surrounded by restaurants.

We positively welcome dogs, our vet that we have used for the past 13 years speaks excellent English to help with passports etc.

About Tansy Forster

Almost 30 years ago we met in Chesterfield...in those days I was working for a chain of hotels training in Hotel Management with a dream to own my own Hotel...he was a newspaper photographer covering the miners strike.

For 15 years we both worked in London, Mike covering stories all over the world & me in Hotel Sales in 1994 was persuaded to set up a recruitment agency with a very close friend in Knightsbridge...this we did until in 2000 Mike decided 6 - 9 months away from home with constant international flights it was time for a change, everything fell into place, house was sold, business sold & on his 50th birthday we moved to Normandy lock, stock & not sure what to do...we started vacation rentals by accident and my hotel training paid off!

Here we are 12 years on with 3 rentals & the nearest to my dream of a hotel!

Tansy Forster purchased this house in 2003
Why Tansy Forster chose Sainte-Marie-du-Mont

Utah Beach is unique, not only is it one of the historic WW2 Invasion beaches in 1944 it is so beautiful with miles of sandy beaches, wild and not over constructed. Our house is built on a parcel of land the French Government sold off just after the war to raise funds...luckily only a small part of the coastline was sold therefore protecting the amazing dunes and wildlife...now it is protected so no more construction can take place. On 1 side of us is the Utah Beach Museum & in the other direction a bird sanctuary covering 1,200 hectares...the bird life here during migration is truly wonderful...we even have harbour seals that pop up in the sea right in front of our house.

What makes this house unique

For over 10 years we've been constantly renovating and developing not only our Utah Beach house, but our home where we have the 2 couple only units - we have tried to blend old with modern conveniences, to supply every thing anyone could wish for in a holiday home...so, from hair driers to electric benders it should be there! We do get a lot of repeat bookings and referrals and over the years have made some great friends... we must be doing something right - we certainly hope so!

For me Utah Beach house is totally unique & when we stay there I always find myself on the beach (always as the only person to be seen for miles), still in my dressing gown with a cup of tea in my hand and our dogs having a ball...a wonderful way to start the day...

Set in the heart of a conservation area of significant importance we are in the beautiful and stunning Parc Naturel Cotentin et du Bessin on UTAH BEACH. On one side of us to the right there is a bird sanctuary 500 yards from the house, on the left side 500 yards away is the memorial and museum for Utah Beach.

Our local village Ste Marie du Mont was the first village in France to be liberated on June 6th 1944.

Band of Brothers story featured around here for parts 2 & 3.

The 82nd & 101st airborne troops parachuted into the area with St Mere Eglise just 6 miles away.

Further up the coast the other invasion beaches are all easy access and well worth a visit. The museums, memorials and information are superb with films in most museums, all of them are really worth visiting...we highly recommend the 360 degree cinema at Arromanches. There is so much to do here, not just the invasion beaches....most folk have to come back for a 2nd visit, 3rd...

Other Activities: Bird watching, dolphin & seal watching, boat trips round the invasion beaches, sand yachting, para wind surfing, beach combing

Golf: Golf here is quite fantastic...

Golf Fontenay-sur-Mer a true Links course only 20 minutes away.

Omaha Golf Made up of three 9 hole courses, the outstanding views of the d-day landings beaches from this course make the whole trip worthwhile. An excellently maintained undulating cliff top course, some of the shots possible are not for the faint hearted.

Barneville Carteret An outstanding links course with undulating fairways, sand dunes, water hazards and narrow greens, this 9 hole course (soon to be developed to 18) benefits from outstanding views of the channel islands

An 18 hole links close to the quaint town of Agon-Coutainville and only 5km west of Coutances, Coutainville is a challenge for golfers of all abilities particularly in the wind.

Perfect family holiday situation

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 10 November 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
The house comfortably accommodates up to 10 persons in charmingly furnished and very well maintained rooms, which make children of three and grandparents of 70 feel equally at home. The atmosphere throughout is exceptionally pleasant and harmonious, and contributed greatly to the well-being of all of us. Seated at the dining-table with glass all round us, we enjoyed both the comfort of the house and the indescribable and unimpeded view of the beach, the Channel and the horizon. After stepping out of the garden-door, it takes one three minutes, even with little children, to get onto the beach, in itself quite wonderdul with its fine sand for long walks and big sandcastles. Here and on the grass path, the dog owners could take a little more care of their pets' production. Shopping in the nearby supermarkets for the specialities of the region and collecting mussels from the water, we made good use of the well-equipped kitchen and had wonderful family meals - for the grandmother's enjoyment the dish-washer was a great help. Contact with the neighbours was easy and casual. Trips to Bayeux and Caen took less than a day each and added their unique attractions to the holiday experience. In recent years I have not slept as many hours as in this house.
It gives one the impression that its owners love it, which makes it easy to tell the children to take very good care of the nice things in it. We were lucky enough to have beautiful weather all week long at the end of October.
I have expressed my enthusiasm to friends about the place and its possibilities. We look back on a perfect holiday.

Owner's Response: You are so right... we do love it! We take our holidays at Utah Beach when we can... we only live 10 miles away!

It really does give us a big buzz when other folk enjoy it as much as we do... thank you for you lovely comments.

2 months later & we are still missing "our" Utah Beach home. So many wonderful memories, from the minute we arrived & the minute we left everything was perfect! The views were fantastic and the beach was magical, you could easily imagine all the troops coming ashore.
Thank you is not enough! The comadery, the information you provided regarding sights to see, travel directions, restaurants and which seafood establishments to purchase our huitres & moules was invaluable. Our grandchildren are still talking about you and your animals and collecting the farm fresh eggs. Your friendship will always be endearing to us. We will be returning!

Two months later and we are still missing "our" Utah Beach home. So many wonderful memories, from the minute we arrived until the minute we left two weeks later we had no problems, everything was perfect. The house was more than we could have ever expected. The rooms were beautifully decorated and clean. The sun room was a bonus even on rainy days is was bright and cheerful. The fully stocked kitchen was delightful for cooking. The house easily accommodated 6 adults and 2 children. The views are fantastic and the beach is magical, you can easily imagine all the troops coming ashore. It is centrally located to all the Northern Normandy attractions and just a short walk to the Utah Beach Museum and local cafe.

Tansy and Mike, thank you is not enough! The information you provided regarding sights to see, travel directions, restaurants and which seafood establishment to purchase or huitre and moule was invaluable. Our grandchildren are still talking about your anaimals and collecting the farm fresh eggs. Your friendship and time spent on Utah Beach will always be endearing to us. We will be returning!
Owner's Response: I can't say how much this means to us...'thrilled' is the best word I can find, that, we came up to some of your expectations for your visit to Europe...

We more than look forward to your return visit!

Perfect Normandy Beach House

Review Submitted: 30 July 2012 Date of Stay: July 2012
Our extended family of 10, including 5 kids, have just returned, still buzzing from our wonderful holiday. As seasoned travellers we have come to accept a dollop of realism when renting a house based on an owner's description; more often than not the reality doesn't match the web description but not this time. Tansy's Normandy beach house more than lived up to expectations. Not only was the beach location ideal but the attention to detail meant that comfort and convenience were prioritised. We were hugely impressed with all the little details that insured a home from home feel eg kitchen stocked with every utensil, permanent hot water for anytime showers, Sky tv and internet wi-fi, more towels than we could ever use, an abundance of beach toys for kids and a terrace packed with outdoor furniture. Needless to say the standard of cleanliness throughout the house was also very high. In terms of location we couldn't have wished for better. Every morning we visited a different town, WW2 attraction or market before returning for a late afternoon on the historic and very beautiful Utah beach. Every evening we dined in the sunroom with the sea and setting sun as our backdrop. As a host Tansy couldn't have been more helpful, advising us on our itinery from arrival to departure and even inviting us to her own lovely home so that the kids could enjoy her mini animal farm while the adults sampled some Normandy hospitality. If a holiday which combines WW2 history with a high standard of comfort and relaxation appeals to you then I strongly recommend this perfect Normandy beach house.
Owner's Response: WOW!! thank you - we are just so thrilled that we have come somewhere near expectations - it was so lovely to meet all of you, a really enthusiastic family looking to enjoy their holidays!

Hopefully you will realize that idle promise and return...!

This is the third year that we've stayed in this lovely house on the beach and it never fails to impress. It's well equipped, with lots of room and character but the best bit has to be it's amazing location - you are quite literally on a quiet, safe and picturesque beach within 30 seconds of leaving the back door. The dramatic story of the D-Day landings is all around and you can't fail to want to learn more about this pivotal point in history, whether it's a short stroll to the Mus?e at Utah Beach or a drive to other beaches and locations. We do all agree though that Utah beach is the most beautiful! This location and the wonderful house always makes for an unforgettable family holiday - with 4 generations from the ages from 3 months - 83 years all enjoying it equally.
Thank you Tansy and we're all looking forward to returning in 2013!
