Five properties - 2 bedroomed accessible gite to 6 bedroomed farmhouse

Five beautifully renovated self-catering gites on a 17th Century Normandy farm, Ferme de la Hamberie, in the fertile lower Calvados region including three wheelchair accessible cottages. .

'LA DEMEURE' is a magnificent 17th century farmhouse with 6 en-suite bedrooms and is ideal for family celebrations.

Gite 'LE FOURNIL'(the old bakery) is fully accessible for guests in wheelchairs as is gite 'MARTIN', a farm building and part of the old stable block and probably the oldest building on the farm. Each of these gites has 4 bedrooms.

Gite 'LAROSE' (accessible for disabled people) and gite 'GOULET', each with two bedrooms, share a large old farmhouse.

The gites face a central green in the heart of the farm and each is provided with its own patio, parking area and private garden.

Guests have access to the outdoor solar heated swimming pool which is securely fenced for safety. A renovated 30 metre barn contains an indoor games area, library and many children's games.

Beautiful Calvados: The region abounds in ancient market towns, fetes and festivals, cider and Camembert. There are many places to visit. Arromanches, Omaha beach, and Monet's garden, the Bayeux Tapestry, Mont St Michel, the Memoriale to Peace in Caen, the National Stud, Horse racing in Deauville, the painters in Honfleur, all are favourites among our guests. The countryside is soft and lush leading to the wooded hills and river valleys of the 'Suise Normandie' with its delightful little riverside towns, ideal for a picnic. Falaise itself is the birth place of William the Conqueror with the castle open to the public.

The Road to la Hamberie: The nearest ferry port is Caen (Ouistreham) a 45 minute drive from the farm. It is served by Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth with three arrivals daily and a fast boat from time to time. Le Havre and Cherbourg are approximately 90 minutes and 2 hours drive away. A fast boat runs from Dover to Boulogne leaving a 3 and a half hour drive to the farm. The Dover ferries to Calais and the Channel Tunnel will leave you a 4 hour drive.

In addition to all the normal provisions, Gite Larose, Gite le Fournil and Gite Martin are accessible for people in wheelchairs and were designed for this purpose. If you have special requirements, including for such things as monkey poles, hoists, electric beds or wheelchairs, we can arrange for these to be hired.

Gite le Fournil is the renovated bakery of the hamlet of la Hamberie. The original fireplace has been retained in a lovely lounge which leads directly on to the private patio and garden. This gite has four bedrooms, a kitchen with all the expected facilities and a separate dining room. There is also full central heating. The gite is fully wheelchair accessible having two bedrooms on the ground floor. The gite is in the heart of the farm and overlooks the central green. For larger groups, gite le Fournil can also be hired together with any of the other gites on the farm. (see also gite Martin)

About Robin McGrother

We are the McGrother family and we live here at Domaine de la Hamberie. I am Robin and am Married to a lovely French girl called Melanie. We live here with Titouan, Zoe and the newest recruit is Ben. As this a small family business, both sides of our family help out in any way they can. Pictured above is my Mother-in-law, Joel, who often comes to stay and help. My mother, Caroline, joins us for the summer months to look after us and make sure we keep working hard.

Why Robin McGrother chose Falaise

My parents bought this property with their partners in 1989 when it was a working farm with lots of cows. They saw the potential in the property and hoped to created a family holiday destination that would provide a safe environment for young families, large groups and guests with disabilities, of which this area of France had very few at that time.

Over many years and tremendous hard work, as well as cajoling countless friends and family members to lend a hand. Some came willingly, others had to be persuaded, but they all enjoyed some unique times here.

Now the site offers a huge playbarn for the children, a solar heated pool, and wheelchair accessible accommodation, with enough room to host large groups of more than 50 people.

What makes this cottage unique

The farm is a unique place. It has a rich history from the 14th century which includes it's use as a field hospital during the second world war,

The ancient cider press helps form part of our wall garden is beautiful, now home to several goldfish.

The pool and playbarn are great facilities that help to make a stay here special.

Our local village, Fresne-la-Mere has a bakery and general store that is only a 10 minute walk away. Freshly baked bread in the morning is a great way to start the day.

but another aspect is that as we live on site we are here to help make sure your stay is as enjoyable as possible. We have great experience of things to do in the area from World War 2 memorial sites to Soft play areas for the children.

We also offer a sense of security for our guests as my French wife is able to help with any cultural issue that arise, and we always on hand to lend a hand, make a call and if necessary help with medical emergencies.

Each self-catering gite faces the central green of the farm with access to the heated pool and play barn.

La Hamberie is an ancient farm near to Falaise, the historic birthplace of William the Conqueror whose castle dominates the old town. There is a wealth of attractions in the area including local chateaux, Roman & Celtic archeology, Festyland for the children (a mini Alton Towers), the national Stud at Haras du Pin, bungy jumping, tree walking, canoeing, go-karts, golf, swimming, walking, cycling, horse racing and pony treking. During World War 2 Falaise and the region around the farm were the centre of the final battle of Normandy in 1944.

We often host veterans of these battles from the USA, Britain and Canada who come to visit the beaches. The picturesque Suisse Normandie and miles of fine sandy beaches are within 40 minutes drive. Deauville, Honfleur, Bayeux and Mont St Michel are within easy reach. The area is also a shopper's haven especially Trouville and Deauville

Other Activities: canoeing, Chateau, WW2 battlefields, markets.

Golf: Within easy reach of la Hamberie there are at least six good or excellent golf courses. These include Garcelles, Clecy, Omaha Beach and Deauville. Many groups of golfers have combined their stay at la Hamberie with a number of rounds of golf and all have very much enjoyed their stay.

  • Payment in Euros is welcomed
    There is a discount for two week hire.
    A deposit of £200 per gite will secure the booking.
    Payment of the balance is required 10 weeks prior to the date of the holiday.
    The gite is available from 16:00 on the first day of rental and must be vacated by 10:00 on the day of departure.
    Pillows and duvets are provided in each gite.
    For those traveling by air, towels can be hired at £5 per person per week if required.
    Cots and highchairs are available free of charge - just let us know your requirements

    Equipment to support handicapped guests is available for hire
  • A security deposit of £100 or 100 Euros is payable on arrival at la Hamberie. £20 per week is allowed for the cost of gas & electricity. Any excess will be deducted from the security deposit.
  • Bed Linen is provided free of charge for bookings of one week or more. If you prefer to bring your own linen you will need pillow slips, sheets and duvet covers. Towels are not provided but may be hired at £5 per person.

Notes: Gite 'le Fournil' has two en-suite family bedrooms and two twin bedrooms, both the latter on the ground floor. There is a separate toilet and shower room also on the ground floor. The kitchen is equipped with a washing machine, dish washer, microwave, cooker, fridge-freezer, coffee maker, toaster, kettle, iron, and all cutlery and crockery needed. The adjacent dining room is overlooked from the minstrel gallery supported by the original oak beams. Garden furniture and BBQ are also provided. Le Fournil has full gas fired central heating. A cot & high chair are available free of charge if booked in advance. This gite is ideal for families and small family groups. Many guests who require wheelchair access have found this gite ideal for their needs. Bed linen is provided free of charge for June-August bookings, and is available to hire at 10€ per person out of high season.

We had a fantastic holiday we were made very welcome. It was ideal for young children, with superb grounds and playbarn to play in. The gite was lovely and had everything you could need. You need to travel to go to all of the attractions and restaurants but it was all very easy. I would recommend it to my friends and hope to return again in the future.

Family holiday

We were a party of 7 adults in the the Gite Le Fournil, two pairs of parents with one daughter and two sons respectively, so we had enormous amounts of room (since it can hold 11). Even fully occupied it would still be spacious, with a vast dining table and separate lounge. The web site descriptions are accurate, and the place was spotless on arrival.

The whole domaine is set away from the road, with all the properties grouped round what is in effect a shared village green, and from Le Fournil one can socialise on the green side of the building, or sit on the private patio at the back.

The furniture is very atmospheric, being collected from French farm houses over a number of years, and fits the building really well. The kitchen equipment is as described on the web site, and more than adequate for a self-catering holiday, while the play barn is an invaluable resource, especially in the event of rain.

The whole farm is easy to get to, and even when our return was re-routed from Caen to Cherburg because of ferry problems the adjusted journey times were quite reasonable.

We have no hesitation in recommending the Domaine as a place to stay, for its location, its atmosphere, the welcome you get from the owners and from the accommodation itself.

Our gites provided accommodation for a special anniversary and the whole family were able to share the special event together, but with the independence of staying in separate accommodation which we find can be very important for a successful holiday.

Family Party 2009

In August 2009 I organized a family party to celebrate the 70th birthday of our aunt.
Our large family party of 36 booked all five gites for the week. Domaine de la Hamberie proved to be an ideal venue for a family celebration of this kind and everyone had a great time.
The facilities on the site are excellent. The pool is very clean and very well maintained. There are also a huge barn with games for if the weather is not so good. The whole environment feels very safe and secure.
We had a barbecue for the entire family which entailed us moving all the garden furniture and barbecues onto the green in the front of the house. This caused no problems at all for the owners who were more than happy to help with anything we needed.
Gite le Fournil was clean, well equipped and ideal for a family.
I would certainly recommend Domaine de la Hamberie to anyone planning this kind of event.
