This 2 story townhouse was built in 1824, and was a French cafe around the turn of the century (1900). Ferrieres is a charming medieval village located 1 hour directly south of Paris. The house faces a triangular place (formerly a cattle market), and features large ancient vaulted cellars, remnants of ancient ruins on the property, a gated driveway and terrace, a beautiful small pebble-covered courtyard, and an old detached small shed/house with fireplace(probably used for animals). On the ground floor there is a quaint old-style kitchen, dining room with iron fireplace, large living room (former billiards hall), bath, and utility room with washer and dryer. The 3 bedrooms are upstairs. The house is rustic, authentic, and comfortable for 4 to 6 people. The courtyard allows privacy and tranquility within the village. For authentic French village life, this house can't be beat! Also a perfect central destination for visiting the wine regions of CHABLIS, SANCERRE, & the LOIRE VALLEY
Shopping: All basic shopping can be done with the local village merchants, including boulangerie(baker), charcuterie(deli-meats), patisserie(pastry shop), boucherie(bucher), etc., and the local Friday market, which should not be missed for fresh produce, cheeses, fish, and other specialties. Ferrieres is home to a group of ceramic artist who have their work-shop and store in the village center. The nearest city, Montargis (population approx. 30,000), is 15 minutes drive from the village. It is known as the 'Venice of the Gatinais' because of its numerous bridges and canals through out the city. There you can find car rental locations, the train station, and any and all stores, services, and products that you would find in any large town.
Further Out: Ferrieres is a great centrally located village of about 3,000 inhabitants. You truly get the great feel of a charming old village, surrounded by very beautiful countryside, but also within easy driving distance to major city centers and interesting visiting destinations in every direction. Directly north just over 1 hour away is easy access to Paris by car or by train. 1 hour to the south-west starts the amazing LOIRE VALLEY, where great wine country, chateaux, and beautiful cities and towns line the river valley. 1 hour to the south-east is CHABLIS. BURGUNDY and the legendary Cote d'Or is about an hour further. CHAMPAGNE is 2-3 hours.
Less than 1 hour south is the famous 'Pont Canal' or canal bridge spanning the Loire, built by Mr. Eiffel himself. The great city of Fountainebleau and it's art community (Barbizon was located here) and it's stunning royal chateau is about 25 minutes north. Champagne country is about 21/2 hours north-east. A world-class golf course is 10 minutes.
Wine Touring: The house is central to 3 major wine regions and is an excellent base for exploring the wines of central France. BURGUNDY: Chablis (1 hour); Burgundy and the Cote d'Or (2 hours); LOIRE VALLEY: Sancerre (1 hour); Anjou, Chinon, Vouvray, Savennieres (2 hours and beyond); CHAMPAGNE: Sezanne (2 hours); Epernay and Reims (3 hours).
I studied French at the University of Washington and traveled to France a couple times during my studies. I went on to become a lawyer and studied law for 1 semester in Paris. I wanted to live in France, and searched country-wide for a unique property. Soon after purchasing the house (close to where friends lived) I developed a love of wine. I became obsessed with this pursuit and now own a wine store in Pasadena, California called Monopole Wine. The house was a perfect base to travel to wine country in the Loire and Burgundy, but I have also since visited every major wine region in France and Italy using the house as my base. And now the cellars are perfect storage facilities to keep my wines.
I love the history behind the house and the fact that this used to be a cafe around the turn of the century with a billiards room where the living room now is. It is right on a pretty little square, and the river Clery is a stone's throw away. The village is very charming and Paris is not too far. This is not modern luxury, but real, rustic, simple, and beautiful.
This house is located in a true authentic small medieval French village and is far from tourists. The residents are super friendly, and it is a very safe place for my son when we visit. He can explore the entire village and surroundings without worry, and there are other children his age next door. The old French windows are classic, and I love getting up in the morning, opening the windows that overlook the little square, and breathing in the fresh air. I may see a neighbor below and say hi, or just check the weather and imagine what I will do for the day. But first it's off to the boulangerie for croissants, bread and homemade jam, and a nice hot cup of espresso.
Ferrieres is an ancient, formerly walled, medieval village with beautiful small winding cobblestone streets, some pedestrian only. It is adjacent to picturesque forests and pretty country-side. The village is renowned for its ancient abbey, churches, and roman ruins(remnants of an arena). But the bonus are the people in the village. They are extremely nice and helpful, but you may need to brush up a bit on your French as not many speak English. Within walking distance you'll find: tennis courts, forest trails for strolling or biking, soccer fields, children’s play park, cafes, the Friday market, fishing, petanque courts, and the entire village to explore. Within a 5 minute drive there is a world-class golf course, horse-back riding, and further out a small petting zoo, and go-kart racing. Paris is 1 hour away by train/car, as is the wine country of SANCERRE and CHABLIS, and the incredible Loire Valley. This central location gives you the best of village life without being too far from Paris and the wine country. Car rental is a must as the village is in the country side
