Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday apartment in Port-Vendres - 5 Quai Pierre Forgas
2 doubles, 1 twin, all en-suite. 1 occasional bedroom. Sleeps 6

Luxuriously appointed and very spacious apartment on quay, completely renovated 2006, with electric heating and air-conditioning.

Our large (123 square metres = 1324 square feet) flat is the entire second floor of an old building on the quay of this lovely old deep-water port, with lots of restaurants, shops, etc, immediately to hand. The position and view are literally unique! The listed facade of the building, completely refurbished and repainted in March 2007, is one of the most photographed sights in Port-Vendres.

Unusually for a second-floor flat, because Port-Vendres rises steeply behind the quay we have a terrace of about 20 square metres at the back, reached by a short raised walkway! On the terrace are a table and chairs as well as a small barbecue.

There are three double bedrooms - the master one with a dressing room and en-suite shower room, including a toilet, with a French (of course) window overlooking the quay.

The other two bedrooms are situated at the back of the flat; one has a double bed and is equipped with an en-suite shower room, including toilet. The other bedroom has twin beds and a shower and washbasin, but no toilet. There is a separate toilet off the entrance hall.

All the bedrooms have reversible air-conditioning (hot for winter; cold for summer).

Each bedroom has colours which are reflected in the bathrooms, the lights, the soft furnishings, and the decorations. The master bedroom has fittings of a turquoise blue which echoes the decorative tiles on the facade of the building, while the other two use a darker blue and yellow respectively in the same way.

The study is situated between the two rear bedrooms and is separated from the entrance hall by a curtain. It has a 'clic-clac' sofa - convertible into a double bed, for occasional adult use or for children. There is a door from the study to a walkway leading behind the flat to the terrace.

The large (35 square metres = 377 square feet), air-conditioned lounge/dining room has two French windows overlooking the quay, and incorporates a fully-equipped kitchen - oven, ceramic hob, dishwasher, fridge, microwave, etc. The dining table has seating for 8.

In the lounge is a television and DVD/CD/Radio system, two three-seater sofas, easy chairs, pouffes, a coffee table and bookcase, with a 'wood-effect' electric fire to brighten those occasional grey days.

We have broadband WiFi Internet access, digital television (therefore Sky News, CNN News, etc, as well as French channels) and telephone giving free calls to landline telephones in all countries of the European Union and a number of other countries worldwide, including Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

The utility room houses the immersion heater and a sink, and also contains a freezer, washing machine, tumble drier, iron, ironing board and vacuum cleaner.

For those holidaying with very young children, the apartment has a collapsible travel cot and a baby bath.

Port-Vendres has a long history - it was known to Greek sailors in the 8th century BC. It is the nearest French deep-water port to Africa and was the embarkation point for Algeria during the period of French rule.

Many fighters fled Nazi occupation from Port-Vendres to join the Free French and the RAF during the last World War. Nowadays it is a lively small fishing port with cruise liners, pleasure craft and some freight.

The town is surrounded by beautiful hills with vineyards producing AOC Collioure and Banyuls wines. The charming resort of Collioure is 3 kilometres away, while the lovely, winding coast road takes you the 21 kilometres to Spain. Also along the coast are the busy beach resorts of Argeles sur Mer, St Cyprien, Banyuls and others. Roads through the Pyrenees take you to Andorra via Mont Louis and Font Romeu, or to Spain via Ceret. Perpignan, with its history, shops and nightlife is 33 kilometres away.

Fabulous place to stay

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 15 August 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
This property is "one out of the box" and we have already been recommending it to friends thinking of making the long trip to Europe for a holiday.
If you are looking for a holiday experience outside the tourist meccas, Port Vendres is worth considering. It is well placed as a central point for day trips [a car is essential for flexible excursions to the many points of interest, though the 1 Euro bus service is great value for local trips]. The apartment is also ideal for lazy days as it is so spacious and comfortable. It is far more than just a place to sleep as being in the centre of a small compact habourside commercial centre it has all you need within a few yards downstairs - good coffee, seafood restaurants, convenience store, supermarket, frock shop etc etc. As a working fishing port the fish is fresh and if cooking in making use of the excellent kitchen is your choice just landed fish is available most mornings on the habourside just along the road along with a stunning range of fruit and veg at the vege shop. There is also a comprehensive fish market at the far end of the town. Of course for breakfast the fresh croisants are also available downstairs. Hint - avoid pizzas - the local chefs may do marvelous things with fish but the pizzas are terrible!
The area is a mecca for those interested in early 20th century modern art with reproductions of famous works positioned at the spot where they were painted. Port Vendres, Coulliere, Ceret [where there is a fabulouse art gallery with the largest Picasso I have seen] are all worth a visit. The comprehensive website and info provided by Frank and Penny also give good info on possible excursions but it is worth while doing some homework on the fascinating history and politics of the area to get the most from your time here We spent 2 weeks with another couple and could have easily stayed longer.
The website for this apartment is exceptional - accurate and informative in so many ways. The property---- I would be happy to live there permanently, it is so comfotable and well placed with beautiful views over he harbour!!! The owners are great, very friendly and helpful, obviously keen to make your holiday experience the best they can.
As mentioned above we have been recommending [raving about] this property to our friends and would love to be able to return one day.

It was lovely to return to this delightful apartment ,our third time now.As always Penny and Frank had thought of everything to insure a really enjoyable holiday. This is by far the best self catering accomodation we have ever had.The situation is perfect, everything you could need within walking distance and a superb view of the port and hills beyond. There is so much to see and do in the area, walking ,swimming, wine tasting ,sight seeing. It is so close to Spain ,the costal road is highly recommended. As always the holiday is never long enough and we are always sorry to leave this beautiful spot and this excellent apartment

Once in a Lifetime

Review Submitted: 05 September 2012 Date of Stay: September 2011
Our time here has been a once in a lifetime opportunity and a great experience.

Your apartment is very comfortable and relaxing. It's a great spot for window gazing and setting out on foot. The weather has been magical too.

We especially loved the walk through the vineyards past Fort St Elme and the Moulin de Collioure. The clear Med sea was also fabulous and so warm!

Our forays to Prats de Mollo, our Yellow Train journey & Carcassonne have given us a good feel for the countryside & French villages.

We didn't eat out a lot as your kitchen is great and the supermarkets offer a good variety. Tasting the local wines has been fun too.

Stay during Easter 2012

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 07 June 2012 Date of Stay: April 2012
Property descriptions were accurate. It was spotlessly clean and very well maintained. The owners left us a welcome pack which was very thoughtful and much appreciated.
Plus side - a fantastic apartment located in the midst of all the activity on the waterfront with superb views of the pleasure harbour. Restaurants and cafes just at the bottom of the stairs.
Minus side - no car parking space, one has to use the local town car parks. We did not find this a problem, but could be more of an issue in the summer season.
Most of the time we left the car parked up and took the 1 Euro bus to Perpignan or walked. Plenty to see and do.
We have been to Port Vendres 5 times and this was the best ever. We will definitely be back and now there is only one place we want to stay - and this is it!
Highly Recommnded
