CARCASSONNE, 3 ELEGANT APARTMENTS OVERLOOKING CENTRAL SQUARE

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday apartment in Carcassonne City - Les Appartements

1 & 2 bedroom apartments sleeping 2, 3 and 6

The apartments are in a listed building overlooking the historic Place Carnot with its famous plane trees, fountain, cafes & picturesque market. Fantastic view of everything that takes place in the square. The market takes place Tuesdays, Thursdays, & covers the whole square on Saturdays. Grandstand view of all the festivals and other events. One minute walk from shops, cafes, restaurants, brasseries, ATMs etc. Bear in mind that being right in the town centre it can sometimes be noisy. Short walk to the Canal du Midi & the fabulous medieval Cite, & numerous excellent restaurants. Very near bus and railway stations. All apartments are beautifully & comfortably furnished & equipped, in a very French style but each with a different character. Les Platanes (2 bedrooms) is elegant & traditional, Troubadour (1 bedroom) is luxurious and romantic, & Neptune (1 bedroom) is modern and stylish.

Further details: Direct flights to Carcassonne from UK, apartments are 7 minutes from the airport. Wonderful holiday summer or winter (heating is included) -& you don't need a car.

If you would like to know more about this apartment and all the things to do in Carcassonne, please contact us and we will give you the address of our very comprehensive web site.

Local festivals - the summer: The Carcassonne Festival takes place throughout July, both in the Cité and in the Bastide St. Louis. Many of the events take place in the Place Carnot and can be viewed from the apartment. The programme contains opera, dance, theatre, jazz, salsa, country and western and other concerts, folklore, street-theatre and comedy. If you don't fancy a rock concert in the Place Carnot, go up to the Cite for some opera. In August a re-enactment of the days of the troubadours takes place. Knights and horses in full costume, along with processions of jugglers, acrobats, mime artists, gymnasts, dancers and musicians will entertain you with jousting and processions. There is an organ festival that takes place from mid-June to mid-September, with concerts on the famous organ at the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire in the Cite. And on Bastille Day (14th July) there is a truly spectacular firework display - the Cité looks as though it is being set on fire with 25 minutes of fireworks.

Local festivals - the rest of the year: There is a Christmas market in the Place Carnot with a stage, a skating rink (3 euros an hour!) with a huge ice spectacular one of the evenings, artificial icicles on the fountain, and artificial snow on Christmas trees and the wooden stalls. There is a huge ferris wheel with views of the town and Cite just outside the Bastide walls, sledging, trampolines, fireworks and many other activities including the Foie Gras fair the Sunday before Christmas. It is quite magic, and clients who have been there over Christmas have been enchanted.

There are three big fairs in Carcassonne during the year, on 6th March, 6th September and the Fair of Ste Catherine on 25th November. These fairs are huge events, with crafts and produce from the region and elsewhere. The Dame Carcas Pig Fair is at the beginning of March and at the end of March there are the antique fairs. The flea market takes place in September each year in the streets of La Trivalle, the district directly underneath the Cite.

I taught infants and Juniors for many years, including two years at an English school in Kuwait, which was a wonderful experience. My own education was entirely in England as I went to a girls' boarding school in the 50s - also quite an experience and one I greatly enjoyed. I left the teaching profession in the late 80s to help my husband set up our own business, a training company that ran courses internationally in the then pioneering field of software testing.

Shortly after we purchased a small Flemish farmhouse in northern France which we still own. It is in a plot of about one acre so we have a large garden to look after and we go over there at least 15 times a year. Our other main hobby is sailing, and we have a 40 foot boat that we keep in Turkey. We don't belong to any local sailing clubs, but are enthusiastic members of the Little Ship Club in London. Tuesday night is Club Night and we go up there as often as we can.

We are the proud grandparents of six grandchildren ranging in age from 4 to 15. Three of them are very musical and play the saxophone, the clarinet and the violin. We take them all over to France when we get the chance, and they also come sailing with us and occasionally skiing.

We live in Southend, in Essex, and are lucky enough to see our grandchildren fairly frequently. The three oldest live just across the Thames, in Kent, the next two live in London, and the youngest and his parents actually are living here with us at the moment, although not for much longer as they will be moving about ten minutes away to their own place very shortly.

We acquired the first apartment in Carcassonne in 2003 and the other two in 2005.

Caroline Quentin purchased this apartment in 2003

Shortly after we got back from Kuwait we took our children on a holiday in France. We stayed partly in camping sites and partly in Logis, and drove everywhere in our white van (well, we do live in Essex, after all!). There were so many highlights of the trip but one of them was undoubtedly our visit to Carcassonne, a place I had read about and seen photographs of, and was desperate to go there and see it for myself. We were all, including the children, bowled over by the place, and years later when retirement was not so far off, we decided to invest in a property there. We came for an initial trip to look round the place again and also drive into the surrounding area. We soon decided that the best place to look for a property was in the delightful main square of the Bastide. Initially I had decided to look for somewhere in the Cite itself but soon realised that this would be a little like living in Disneyland! But the Place Carnot is only a short - and very attractive - walk from the Cite, and has all the advantages of being in the town centre. Living there even for a short time as a visitor, makes you feel as if you are part of the local community.

Once we had decided this was where we wanted to be, we perused all the estate agents and left our details, and then came down for several more visits before finding the ideal place. Mind you, as with English estate agents, several of the property details we were given were not even in Carcassonne, let alone in the Place Carnot! But in the end we found exactly what we were looking for. So ideal did we find it that when the opportunity arose a couple of years later to buy the two apartments above it, that this is exactly what we did.

We were undoubtedly very lucky to find exactly what we were looking for. And we do love to share our little bit of Carcassonne with our clients. We have furnished and equipped all the apartments as though they are solely for our own use, including a handful of family photographs. Many clients remark that they feel as though they have borrowed a friend's apartment rather than a rental apartment and this is just the impression we want to give. There are so many extra touches, such as alarm clocks beside the beds, sewing boxes, typical French shopping bags so that you can wonder around the market below feeling like a genuine local! However many times we visit we still love the moment each morning when we open the shutters and look out over the square below, particularly on market day - you couldn't be anywhere else but France.

Les Platanes has everything you could wish for: super position within walking distance of Carcassonne's attractions, space, comfort, a grandstand view of all the action in the Place Carnot and a wealth of information to assist with your holiday plans. The owner, Caroline, has thought of everything needed to create a wonderful home from home - we knew from the minute we walked in, that we would have a fantastic holiday.
We spent our week enjoying leisurely breakfasts with fresh bread etc. from bakers just a few steps away from the apartment, watching the comings and goings in the square, and then travelling to Niaux [prehistoric cave paintings], Montsegur, Puilaurens and Peyrepertuse [Cathar sites], Rennes le Chateau, Limoux [to sample the sparkling wine!], Narbonne and Perpignan [the Procession de la Sanche on Good Friday is not to be missed].
We would return in the evening to the comforts of the apartment, either to prepare a meal or to try some of the recommended restaurants on the list provided [ we liked Chez Fred and Le Sixieme Sens ]. We found the apartment to be very clean, well equipped and spacious for us all [ourselves plus son and daughter and their partners.
We met so many friendly, helpful people on our travels and wished we could have stayed longer - hopefully we will return to explore more of this wonderful part of France and stay in this fantastic apartment.
Finally we would also like to comment on the wonderful service we received from Caroline - from the first contact when we enquired about the availability of the apartment, to the note of thanks when we returned the keys. Everything was so well organised and we felt more like friends than clients - all in all a wonderful experience which we would wholeheartedly recommend.

We enjoyed 3 nights in Neptune. Great location, well appointed apartment - loved the color coordination throughout the aptmt. I was off to the boulangerie each morning for our croissants and found the city people washing down the street. One evening we sat in Place Carnot to watch two acrobatic groups perform as part of the summer schedule. Lots of tourist info in the aptmt and we took one drive N to Lastours. We learned about the Canal du Midi and the Cite exceeded our expectations. Yea for the AC! We received an email with info package that was very thorough.
Owner's Response: Many thanks to these clients for a great review. We are delighted they had such a good time, and especially that the apartment was such a success.

The location of Les Platanes is perfect. In the centre of activity,it is a wonderful place to sit & relax and watch the world go by. Cafes, restaurants, bread & cake shops, supermarkets (Monoprix) all within a few yards.
The apartment is very clean and comfortable and equipped with everything you could need. The beds are very comfortable.
We caught the 'navette' to and from the airport. the stop at the railway station was a very short walk away from the apartment.
Carole & David, the local contacts gave us a warm welcome, complete with a bottle of wine and were able to answer any questions we had.
We ate at the LongChamps restaurant on the opposite side of the sqare. Food was very good and staff were friendly and helpful.
The Saturday market should not be missed!!
We also had a wonderful trip on the Canal Midi on Sunday morning.
Overall a fantastic weekend in a wonderful location. Thank you Caroline.

well worth a visit, much easier than a hotel

Before reviewing can I say that myself and sister both work in the hotel/catering industry and there therefore ultra critical!!
The two appartments were ideally situated for our few days in Carcassonne.Having been to the city before we knew whare we were going. As we normally stay in country areas we were prepared for the city noise previous users had mentioned but found it was not a problem, even pleasant to hear the buzz of the town.
The appartment is very well equiped and although we only did breakfast in and ate out mostly there was nothing we couldn't find.We did however have a minor problem with the gas and did not find any instructions about gas bottle etc? Again no great problem as the cooker had an electric hob as well.
The rooms are comfortably furnished in a shabby chic Frech style which may not be my personal taste but they fitted in with the overall feel of the place.
Cleanliness of the appartement was as good as we could have expected although my one critisism is the whole appartment could do with a lick of paint( particularly the entrance and stairs) to bring it up to the standard that the owners are obviously striving to portray.
This however did not detract from our break and the other advantages of the place outweighs my pickiness!
As I discussed with the owner it would be simpler, as she did for us, to give one price including everything rather than have to sort out prices for laundry ,cleaning, taxes and rental.
I would use the place again and would recommend it

Owner's Response: Thank you to Vixmum for her comments. It is good to have constructive criticism from a professional! We are in the process of repainting Les Platanes bit by bit, although I have to say that no other client has ever commented on the paintwork. Neptune, which was rented at the same time as Les Platanes by Vixmum, definitely does not need a lick of paint as it was re-painted throughout about five years ago.
The entrance and stairs to the apartments however are a different matter, and are in need of more than just a lick. However, unfortunately we are stuck in the middle of one of those interminable French sagas, which may sound familiar to other French property owners. Common areas of a French apartment block are owned jointly by all the owners, called a Copropriety and anything non-essential such as decorating has to be agreed at the AGM. In spite of the challenge to our French, we eventually got an agreement to redecorate, but now there is a possibility that a door may be installed where the electricity meters are currently situated, thus rendering redecorating impractical until this is done. Watch this space!

A perfect little place and beautifully furnished

I was impressed with this apartment from the moment I first contacted the owner by email to the moment I walked out the door with my luggage early one morning to catch the train to our next destination. Caroline is friendly and helpful and provided us, not only with every detail we could wish for on Les Plantanes, but a good deal of information about Carcassonne, La Cite, driving in France, directions, trains and plane services and more. There were wine and flowers when we arrived and the furnishings and decor are quite luxurious and tasteful for a holiday apartment. The location is ideal and, as has been remarked upon by previous tenants, it's great to be able to sit by the window and watch the people in the square below. The beds were comfortable, the bedrooms were on the quiet side of the building, there were some nice books to read (I made it all the way through Stephen Fry's "The Liar" which I would recommend) and it is spacious.
We did have a few small issues. There is no oven for example so we were not able to take full advantage of all the wonderful produce from Saturday's market in Place Carnot or the Elizabeth David compendium which is on hand. Also, Carcassonne traffic is quite noisy, primarily because so many people seem to tear around on two-stroke motorbikes and scooters at all hours of the day and night. This can't be blamed on Caroline of course, and it must be said that the bedrooms are more than adequately insulted from the noise at night time, it's just a shame that this splendid city is adversely affected by traffic noise.
Finally, a note about Chez Fred which many people have recommended both here and on other websites. On the night we went, the service was very slow, the waiter spilt a glass of red wine over a lady's beautiful dress and my Cassoulet so so over-cooked, it was completely dried out. There are many other people who rate it very highly so they were probably just having a bad night.
Would I stay at Les Plantanes again? I most certainly would and thank you again Caroline for making the whole experience so easy and pleasant.

Owner's Response: I am delighted that this visitor all the way from Western Australia found Les Platanes so enjoyable.
The microwave does in fact double as an oven, so I shall have to make this clearer in the information pack. It is quite small and I would hesitate to bake a sponge cake in it, but I have roasted a chicken, which was perfectly satisfactory.
I am sorry their experience with Chez Fred was not good. Most of the restaurants have their off-days, often I suspect because Le Patron is away. However I will ask clients to report on it and try and establish if this was in fact an off-day, or whether for some reason, possibly a change of ownership, it has gone down hill.

Car: not necessary

Step straight into French provincial life in one of our beautiful apartments. The apartments are right in the centre of Carcassonne's Bastide St. Louis, and just a short walk from many sights, including the fairy tale medieval Cité and the Canal du Midi. By far the best place in town to stay for the Christmas festivities, overlooking the beautiful ice rink, icicle-covered fountain and pretty Christmas market. Grandstand view of Ice Spectaculars and the illuminations each evening at dusk. Numerous restaurants and cafés in the square itself and around. Boulangeries, pharmacies, supermarket, ATMs in the square. Internet cafes 5 mins walk away. Easy train ride to other towns - Toulouse, Narbonne, Albi, Limoux and many more. In the summer take a half hour bus ride to a popular recreational lake nearby. Car not necessary but if you have one explore the Cathar castles and the vineyards of Languedoc (coaches go to both in the summer), the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean coast.
