The house that stunned a Frenchman !

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 16 November 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
Still off the beaten track and in quiet surroundings the house we understand was orginally a goat-herders' dwelling, fully and lovingly restored with the essentials and conveniences of modern living, it maintains the flavour of rural Provence - stone-flag limestone floors, genuine open fireplace, bare stone walls, duck-egg pastel shutters. Subtle works of art abound too. Essential modernity exists but speaks quietly and with due respect for the inherernt ambience.
Yes, there is satellite television, broad-band internet and tele what-nots. Yes, there are washing machines ad nauseaum - but who in the Dickens/Sam Hill needs all that - we are on holiday, we are getting away - relaxing. Take your partner up by La Bastide's beautiful pool area, put on a ghetto-blaster, dance a bossa nova under a clear star-studded night with the view of the world, well, Fayence, instead of watching others doing it on TV. Take the two bicycles provided out on the old rail-track. Go adventuring. Provence is for all your senses. Rediscover your senses here then, like a released battery hen - the smell of rosemary, the sound of crickets, the feel of the dry piney, olive grove undergrowth, the sight of Seillans, the tastes of well...French food.
Mod-cons who needs them - always breaking down anyway !
Get back in touch with the essentials of life. We did, and could at La Bastide. Our fellow French, native of Nice and guest of ours, was simply thunderstruck at the beauty of Seillans and La Bastide - the French sometimes think their land is Paris and Nice and the bits in between are just a lumpen land of "paysans".
She is now a convert to her own country.
My family love coming back (third time now) to Seillans and La Bastide - for it has something that no satellite channel can give you - it has soul, and the place always, and without fail, gives us our mojo back.

A little piece of heaven

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 28 November 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
We have been renting properties in France for a couple of years, mostly in the somewhat cheaper region of the Dordogne. But since we didn't get the amount of sunshine we expected for two years in a row, even in the middle of the summer, we decided to head for the Cote d'Azur. Rightly so - we had two weeks of brilliant weather, and the Bergerie at Seillans proved to be a real gem.
The Bergerie is located on a hill, surrounded by terraced gardens. There are only a couple of villas nearby, so there is hardly any traffic and only the occasional sound of a splash in a distant swimming pool. The view of the surrounding hills and the mountain range near the coast is magnificent, at night the lights of Fayence twinkle in the distance...
One of the great pleasures of holidays is food. Since we have two small children, we like to do most of the cooking ourselves. Therefore we were very pleased with the excellent equipment and the shaded terrace in the front of the house (for breakfast) and patio near the swimming pool (for lunch and dinner).
The pool and surrounding garden are so nice it's actually difficult to draw yourself away from them to go on trips. But of course, there's so much to see it would be foolish not to go out and at least drive along the Grande Corniche; take the ferry from Saint Maxim to Saint Tropez; visit the spectacular Gorges du Verdon.
The property is very well maintained, with a pool man, cleaner and gardener appearing regularly. The next-door neighbor takes care of keys etc. We only had a small problem with the hot water boiler (actually my youngest son managed to turn it off someway) - which was instantly solved by a friend of the owner.
The only minor thing I should mention is pool safety - the pool is not visible from the downstairs part of the villa, so you really have to keep an eye on your children all the time!
All in all, this place has everything we were looking for, and we definitely want to go back there in the future.

Dissapointed in the Var

2 out of 5
Review Submitted: 25 August 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
The Bastide is a lovely stone Mas in a wonderful position on a hillside overlooking Seillans and the surrounding area. However, although secluded, it is not totally private as advertised. There is an elevated and frequently used vehicle track which runs alongside the grounds of the property allowing views over the Mas, patio and pool. This gave some cause for concern regarding security as youths on mopeds stopped there.

The equipment in the villa is basic and in need of updating. Although not essential, a microwave would have alleviated the problems encountered with the aging and poorly maintained cooker. We had stressed to the owner, the importance of english speaking satellite TV being available. He reassured us that of the 500 satellite TV channels, 25% were english speaking; there were in fact 3 english news channels - the remainder being German and French.

Considering the weekly rental costs, the property is not ideal for the British Client. The information pack provided was extremely limited, tatty and not in english. We had no idea of local events or markets etc. On our arrival we were simply handed the keys and left to it (the first task being to make the bed). Customer service is poor; when assistance was required it all became very difficult.
Owner's Response: The origin of this report is the fact that Mr.& Mrs. X infatuated with certain UK TV programs were unable to watch these during their stay as aledgedly they were not
part of the over 500 stations available on the 2 papaboles
(Astra and Hotbird). The resulting withidrawal effect was
severe and triggered this unfriendly report which is a first in
over 20 years of succesful summer rentals.
It is in large contrast with the enthusiastic reactions of over
100 select tenants (without exception on a high sociocultural level - MDs, lawyers, publishers, reseach
scientists , business executives etc) which were full of
praise for the house and the authentic "ambiance de
provence" it provides. Many of them are repeat customers,
the record of 10 consecutive stays will be beaten this fall !
As the Romans said: De gustibus non est disputandum.
