Ille-et-Vilaine is a department of eastern Brittany, whose coastline stretches from the Bay of Mont St Michel to St Briac in the west. Ille-et-Vilaine has all the properties which have made Brittany such a favoured holiday destination for family holidays; excellent beaches, rich heritage, enchanting castles, deep forests and unrivalled gastronomy.
Summer is a magnificent time to visit Ille-et-Vilaine as the golden beaches of the Emerald Coast are perfect for sunbathing, having a game of boules, swimming, body boarding and surfing. This stretch of coast is known partly for its famous ports and marinas, and sailing has been a strong part of the maritime climate of Ille-et-Vilaine. There are many sailing schools along the coast, and plenty of beaches from which you can take to the waters.
Golf is also a very popular sport available from an Ille-et-Vilaine property, especially around Dinard, although there should be no trouble finding a round from any of the self catering holiday rentals in Ille-et-Vilaine.
The historical Bretagne towns which dominate the landscape are delightful to explore. The town of Figures boasts the largest medieval castle in the whole of Europe, and the narrow, twisting streets are filled with charming boutiques and delightful restaurants.
The countryside of Ille-et-Vilaine is covered in thick forests, which are peaceful and picturesque places to walk cycle and ride, and all three of these activities have become a major draw for tourists thinking of renting a self catering Ille-et-Vilaine property, cottage or gite.
Rennes is a beautiful city, with the best nightlife in Brittany. The Rue Saint Michel, known locally as the Street of Thirst, is lined along both sides with only bars! The Festival des Tombees de la Nuit is a huge street party with free street entertainment and great food held in early July, which is a magnificent time to take an Ille-et-Vilaine holiday rental in Rennes.
No holiday in a Ille-et-Vilaine property would be complete without a visit to the famous St Malo. If you are arriving or leaving for England from the port at St Malo, take an extra couple of hours to explore the old town. The city is surrounded by impressively thick walls, sitting on a small island. The streets are filled with charming cafes, fantastic ice cream stalls and quaint boutiques.
The beaches of Ille-et-Vilaine become a focal point for tourism in the summer as temperatures regularly reach into the high 20’s (°C), and the cool of the winter, when temperatures hover around 8°C, are ideal for walking, cycling and exploring the towns of Ille-et-Vilaine.
Dinard Airport (DNR) receives cheap flights from Southampton(SOU), and Rennes (ZFL) is serviced by London Stansted (STN) in under an hour. Alternatively, if you would like to take your car, the port of St Malo connects the south coast with property in Ille-et-Vilain
