Mid Norfolk Railway: Catch the Train At The Station.

- Weekends and Wednesdays (summer only)

The Mid-Norfolk Railway Preservation Trust was established in 1995 with the aim of buying the then-disused line between the Norfolk market towns of Dereham and Wymondham, and restoring regular passenger services for the first time since the line closed in 1969. We currently own 28km (17.5 miles) of track and trackbed through central Norfolk's most attractive countryside, making us one of the largest preserved railways in the UK today.

Please contact us for web site details.

Railway Fishing Lakes: Behind the Station - Walking Distance.

Railway Lake is a 60-peg spoon-shaped water only 10 minutes from the main site at Barford and has been developed with silver fish anglers specifically in mind. As a result, it is stocked with roach, rudd, quality bream, tench, chub, skimmers and some small carp. As a result of the mix of fish, it is expected rapidly to become a top class winter fishery, which is being used predominantly for matches. Although Railway Lake is a predominantly a silver fish water, small carp were introduced at the end of September 2001 to keep the water coloured and to combat the tightly shoaling silver fish. However, to enable anglers to keep to using light tackle when fishing for all species, the carp will be kept below the 4lbs mark.

Peele's free-range Norfolk Black Turkeys are celebrated by top chefs and food writers — including Rick Stein and Delia Smith — across the UK for their gamey flavour, moist and finely-textured meat. They begin hatching in April and throughout the summer and autumn their turkey chicks are nurtured to full maturity on home-grown feed and rations. Peele's is proud of our outstanding welfare practices and continue to rear their turkeys using traditional methods and a good measure of TLC. Well worth a visit, the only way to buy your turkey.

John and I stayed at the waiting rooms in July 2009. We talk fondly of the property and how much we enjoyed watching the trains going by. Great location, comfortable accommodation and fantastic hosts. Thank you for making our stay a memorable one!

Thuxton Station in Summer

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 05 July 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
Once again a very enjoyable stay in a very clean and comfortable location. The facilites are good but there is no washing machine. We would say that a car is a must if you're going to stay here as its 5 miles to the nearest town (Dereham). Lots of walks in the local area but we'd recommend getting a copy of the local ordanance survey map to find out exactly how to get to them. Good shopping is available in Dereham with TESCO, Morrisons and LIDL all in the town. We found that lots of local pubs in the mid-Norfolk area are dog friendly and are reasonable for meals, we'd recommend the Poachers Pocket at Bacton/Walcott on the north Norfolk coast. You can catch the train from Thuxton station into Dereham or Wymondham on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday when the season is on (ends in September). Although trains run on the adjacent railway lines, they are not obtrusive. The owners are friendly and helpful with plenty of advice and assistance. If you take your dog, there are footpaths close at hand and you can exercise it freely in Dereham on Netherd Moor, a local common just past the train station on the edge of town. The local area is easily accessible on the A47 to Norwich and Yarmouth and there are reasonable road links to most of East Anglia. This is a location you just want to return to. There is a pub in Garveston, about 2 miles away but we don't recommend the food (allegedly Mexican); if you want a pub, try the Swan at Mattishall about 4 miles from the accomodation, there is also a good fish and chip shop in Mattishall beside the church.

Thuxton waiting room

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 13 July 2010 Date of Stay: June 2010
We had see the waiting room a number of times as we passed on the trains, and each time my husband said he would like to stay. Eventually, we stayed for a week in June 2010. I had arranged for my husband to go on an engine driver experience for his 60th birthday whilst we were there. Andrew and Shirley knew about this and kept the secret with me. They even allowed my sister and brother-in-law to stay for two days.

The accommodation is lovely, very relaxing and we had a lovely time. The surrounding area has much to offer, and the sea is never far away. Andrew and Shirley are very laid back which makes for a really pleasant atmosphere. We hope to stay again in the near future.

The waiting room is dog friendly, but we didn't take ours as he doesn't behave in company although he would have loved it.

Thankyou Andrew and Shirley for a great holiday, and for keeping the secret. Also, thanks to the Mid-Norfolk railway for giving my husband a day to remember. I Cannot fault anything.

Review Submitted: 11 September 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We enjoyed a fantastic week at this holiday let. It was in a peaceful location with a lovely feature - real steam trains passing the front door at the weekends (and a diesel train on Wednesdays). The accommodation itself was charming and offered all we required for our stay. Andrew and Shirley couldn't have been better hosts. Our children loved having use of the trampoline and climbing frame and having all the space to run around in. If only we hadn't filled up our days so much they would have played in the pool too! We were all really sorry to leave at the end of our stay - but certain we will be back.We would recommend this property.
