Day trips from Komarna: Komarna is ideally located to make day trips to places of interest, beauty, and historic value.

1) The Bacina Lakes at Ploce (20km) boast beautiful clear waters and many species of fish.

2) The Kravica Waterfalls are about 20km from Metkovic and are a spectacular sight and well worth a visit.

3) The town of Mostar in Bosnia boasts an abundance of history with a Moorish theme to it having been occupied by the Turks centuries ago. It also has a public market on Saturdays.

4) A visit to Medjugorje, (30km) a Catholic Pilgrimage seeing millions visiting the village after the Holy Virgin appeared to 6 children on several occasions in 1981.

5) A ferry ride to the islands of Korcula, Hvar or Brac. Korcula is the birth place of Marco Polo and an attractive fortified walled town. There are street performances by dancers and actors in the summer.

6) Canoe Safari & Photographic Safari trips are within easy distance and great fun for kids and adults.

Day Trips continued: 6) A visit to this part of Croatia would not be fulfilled without a visit to Dubrovnik, a UNESCO Heritage Site. The old town is steeped in history and wonderful architecture. Walk around the battlements and museums before treating yourself to a meal at one of the many restaurants. In the summer months, open air concerts are performed in the evenings in the square at the end of the main street. Other street performers are evident during the day also. All the shops are open until late evening, so make your trip a full day and evening. It is well worth it.

7) A visit to the Peljesac Peninsular by car makes an interesting day out. This is the land opposite the apartment across the water. Where it joins the mainland is the ancient town of Ston with its battlements. It is famous for its oysters and shellfish and there are some excellent restaurants there. The Peninsular is the wine making area for the region and you will pass several wineries whilst driving north. Stop for a small taster.

Having treated yourself to some of the day trips above, its time to chill out by the waters edge and relax on your vacation. The water is warm and crystal clear. There is a diving board and loungers can be hired through Villa Bili. If you require privacy, our balcony is not overlooked at all but still soaks up the sunshine. There are kayaks, jet skis and motor boats for hire through Villa Bili for the active minded. Also available for a small fee through Villa Bili is the use of the indoor pool, sauna and gymnasium room on the ground floor of the apartment block. If you like beach holidays, the village beach (pebbles) is 100 metres at the end of the road. You can also walk to it using the waterfront path. There are other beaches in the area. There is a restaurant and bar at Villa Bili with a good choice of menu, but there are several restaurants on the coast road north and south and in the nearby towns of Opuzen, Klek and Neum, all a short distance away.

1) The best seafood risotto I've ever tasted in Mali Ston.
2) Waterfalls lovely. Well worth going. Good meal in Dude and Mate restaurant in Vid by the river.
3) Korcula-good day out but don't take the car. Best as foot passenger.
4) Staff at Villa Bili couldn't be more helpful. Stunning views from the apartment which is superb.
5) Dubrovnik is an absolute must, the walls are worth a visit but be prepared to climb steps.
6) Beach at Gradac is great for kids with water slides and arcades. Marco Polo restaurant was excellent.
7) Mostar is a good day trip and worthwhile.
8) Everything here for a relaxing holiday - excellent accommodation and grandstand views-thank you Penny.
9) October is ideal time as you can park everywhere. If you like history, Stolac in Bosnia is fascinating.

Dubrovnik & Kravica are 'must' sees

Dubrovnik & Kravica are 'must' sees
  • Review Submitted: 07-Jan-2013

Thank you for being a conscientious home owner and allowing us to share in your lovely home. Your tips, directions etc were invaluable to us. Visits to Dubrovnik old town and Kravica waterfalls are must sees/visits. The Dude and Mate restaurant in Vid had excellent food. Staff at Villa Bili were very accommodating allowing us to have family style dinners and sampling a variety of Croatian dishes for a fair price. Our dolphin watch was rewarded seeing 2 swim past at about 9am. Thank you for a lovely holiday home. These views are some of the most beautiful we've ever seen.

Great apartment with fantastic days out

  • Review Submitted: 07-Jan-2013

Great apartment, lots of space, nice balcony and most of all a wonderful view. Enjoyed fantastic days out (all Penny's recommendations) to Mostar, Mljet island (nature reserve and worth the boat fare), Korcula (another worthwhile boat trip), Peljesac Penninsula and found a real gem in Trstenik, Ston, Makarska and Gradac.

Kravica waterfalls were the highlight

  • Review Submitted: 07-Jan-2013
  • Date of Stay: Aug 2012
The waterfalls were the highlight of our week. We went later (2pm) and were able to drive right down to the falls. We hired kayaks for an hour which was great fun. Loved eating on the balcony in the evening and strolling along the waterfront with nightime swims. Bought mussels just outside Ston for 15 kunas for 1.5 kilos.

Worth getting to the waterfalls early

A lovely apartment with fantastic views and everything you could need. Waterfall trip was amazing and not to be missed. The teenagers braved jumping from the rocks into the water. Get there early to get room for your picnic. Bili's restaurant is fab with friendly staff and delicious food.

Car: recommended

Komarna is a fishing village on the coastal road between Dubrovnik and Split. It is 70 km north of Dubrovnik and 120 km from Split. It lies just north of the town of KLEK. (See little blue and white house on adjacent map for approximate location). The village waterfront faces south west and benefits from sun from 9am though to sunset. It is a rural location. Opuzen or Neum, both 15 minutes drive are the nearest towns north and south with banks and large supermarkets. Restaurants are along the coast road both in Klek and Neum and towards Opezen. The apartment is ideally located for day trips to islands by ferry, historic sites and towns, the wine region, the shellfish area or for just lying by the water's edge or on local beaches. In our block is a cafe, indoor pool opening out onto the water, sauna and gym. There is a restaurant and bar in the adjacent Villa Bili and a small shop at the rear. Until visited, it won't be appreciated why Croatia is the new jewel of the Mediterranean

Other Activities: Motor boats, jet ski, canoeing, photographic safaris

There is a small charge levied for the use of the indoor facilities and swimming pool which is owned by Villa Bili owners. The pool is open during the season from mid June/beginning of July through to the end of August or maybe mid September. We do not have any control over the pool's availability. Pedallos and boat rides are available as well as jet ski hire. These are all run by our hosts Villa Bili. Facilities can vary from season to season but have been fairly consistent over the past 4-5 years..
  • The apartment can be rented out of the holiday season up to the middle of November when the weather is still warm during the day. Please discuss with the owners if you require this. The warm weather starts in April and May, June, September and October are lovely months due to less holiday traffic. A superb seafood meal is only 20 minutes drive away in Ston. For internet access, the wireless 3G Broadband network is available and is supported in Croatia. Signal reception is excellent at Komarna. Villa Bili also has internet access. If you don't drive there yourself, Villa Bili can collect from the airports and hire out rental cars from Komorna.

Notes:
The accommodation provided is for up to 8 persons in a purpose built 3 double bedroom apartment. As such, the dining table seats 8, the balcony tables and chairs are for 8 in addition to sun lounger’s and Directors chairs. The apartment is designed so that it can be totally lived in for 2 weeks by a family with all amenities on hand as opposed to 'just somewhere to sleep at night'. There are steps down to the block entrance from the parking area and steps lead down to the water. The accommodation is suitable for the elderly providing they can climb steps/stairs. At the waters edge, sun loungers and sun umbrellas are available through Villa Bili. Run by local Croatians, they are our hosts and look after our guests. The indoor pool is available to guests but there is a small daily charge. This is open from mid June to mid September. The doors open out creating an outdoor pool looking across the sea. Villa Bili has Internet access for a small fee. Mobile phone reception is excellent.
