US Virgin Island holidays provide a tropical getaway to guests only around 2.5 hours away from New York, with pristine beaches, National Parks and fabulous weather all year-round. The island is littered with beachside villas and apartments where families and couples can enjoy their own piece of paradise.
Our Virgin Islands favorites:
Sunbathing and swimming in the crystal clear waters of the Virgin Islands is clearly a great option for holidaymakers, but US Virgin Islands holidays offer so much more than a beach holiday.
Water sports are a favourite with many visitors and are well-catered to, with sailing, snorkelling, kayaking, water skiing, kite boarding, parasailing and tubing all on offer. There are also some fantastic diving opportunities with the scarcely visited Eagle Shoals just off the coast.
Other types of sport are also available, with plenty of fishing opportunities and golf courses in St. Thomas and St. Croix which are open to visitors paying green fees.
St. Thomas is home to Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the US Virgin Islands. The bustling port contains restaurants and bars offering up tasty local seafood accompanied by local music and dance, as well as the obligatory souvenir shops. Visitors can also take a cable car ride up to Paradise Point for some stunning views of the entire island.
The Virgin Islands National Park on St. John contains numerous hiking trails which wind around the ruins of a historical sugar plantation, through hills and valleys and around salt ponds, offering some great photographic and bird-spotting opportunities.
The island of St. Croix is home to a number of wildlife refuges. Divers and snorkelers should head to the Buck Island Reef National Monument, or land-based parks include the Green Cay National Wildlife Refuge, home to the rare St. Croix Ground Lizard. The island also houses the Christiansted National Historic Site, which has several preserved examples of old colonial structures and information on the history of the area.
The weather in the US Virgin Islands is pretty consistent all year-round, with very little rain and average temperatures of between 26°C and 29°C. This makes the Virgin Islands the perfect place to escape the winter on a self-catering holiday, and December to May is the peak tourist season for precisely this reason.
Two major airports serve the US Virgin Islands – Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas (STT) and Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on St. Croix (STX). The choice of which to use depends on the island on which your selected self-catering accommodation is located, with St. Thomas also providing a connection to St. John and Water Island. Visitors from Europe will have to connect to flights in the US, usually at New York or Florida, and many flights will also include a connection in Puerto Rico.
