Known locally as "Briland", Harbour island was the capital of the Bahamas and the second largest town after Nassau in the 1900s. The island is just 3.5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide and has an estimated population of 1500-2000 people. As well as having warm sunshine, pink sandy beaches and clear aquamarine waters, Harbour Island holiday rentals also makes the ideal base for exploring the island's history, music, cuisine and duty-free shopping.
Stroll the soft sandy beaches looking for exotic seashells, sunbathe, swim in the warm waters or relax with a good book at your own comfortable Harbour Island villa. The island has an excellent reef for diving just a few hundred yards offshore. It also creates calm lagoon waters for swimming and snorkeling. Bone fishing is a test of patience but is a popular activity on Harbour Island. Visitors can take day trips to Spanish Wells and North Eleuthera, go fishing or island hopping by boat or enjoy a picnic on a deserted island. The town has historic churches, art galleries and local souvenir shops where local handicrafts and bargain clothing can be picked up at very reasonable prices.
Explore the island's main town, Dunmore, on foot or by golf cart as the Victorian-style village has narrow streets and pretty bougainvillea-covered archways. It is one of the oldest settlements on the Bahamas and has a suitably quaint village centre. Many people head for Arthur's Bakery which serves as a meeting place for local artists and travelers. Stroll along Dunmore Street with a local guide and learn about the founding families of Harbour Island including the Loyalist Cottage built in 1797. Climb the Hill Steps, cut into the hillside long ago by the local inhabitants, or visit the cave called Titus Hole, once used as a jail. Enjoy taking a day trip by ferry to Nassau to see the historic sites and indulge in some tax-free shopping.
The Bahamas enjoy warm sunny weather all year round, making it a popular destination for winter visitors in particular, when daytime highs are around 25°C (77°F). During the summer it can be very hot and humid, reaching 31°C (88°F) and this is also the rainy season when heavy afternoon showers are likely.
Visitors to Harbour Island holiday rentals usually fly into the tiny airport of North Eleuthera (ELH) airport from Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Nassau, all just a short hop away. The Bahamas Fast Ferries also offer transport to Harbour Island from Nassau. From the airport or harbour a short taxi drive will deliver you to your Harbour Island holiday villa.
