Claytor Lake runs for 21 miles through the Claytor Lake State Park at Pulaski. Mountain Lake is also ideal for nature lovers to visit, with 20 hiking and birding trails, a wetlands area, boating and special events. Start at the Giles County Historical Society office in Pearisburg then tour the 1829 Andrew Johnston House, the Doctor’s Office (1857) and the Museum. There is also a Genealogy Research Office and a museum shop. Roanoke offers a Coach and Trolley Museum and Wytheville has many museums. Follow the Artisans and Heritage Trail, visit the Rock House Museum or the Thomas J. Boyd Museum and Children’s Discovery Centre.

This US Airways hub has flights to most US cities and further afield with Air Canada, American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, Lufthansa and United Airlines. From the airport, pick up a hire car and head north on the I-77 for about 143 miles. Allow 2-3 hours for this scenic journey. A car is necessary to enjoy a holiday in the Blue Ridge Highlands.
