Not many places in the middle of Europe can boast year round outdoor attractions but Salzburger Saalachtal is one such area. It is situated among the Austrian Alps in the west of the country and offers fantastic panoramic views throughout the year. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas, chalets, apartments and campsites.
Winter time here provides great sport including skiing at Lofer Alm with 46 kilometres of ski trails for downhill, cross country and snowboarding. Visitors can take sleigh rides and go on toboggan runs in the mountains here. Other winter sports available here include ice skating, curling and tubing. Salzburger Saalachtal is a wonderful location for walking and cycling with great scenery all around and paths with different levels of difficulty. Visitors can enjoy some holiday pampering at spas or try the hay baths at Weissbach bei Lofer. There are golf courses in the region as well as a slightly different game called “hiking and golf” in Lofer St. Martin bei Lofer. Other sports available in the summer are paragliding, swimming, rafting and canoeing. The area houses numerous bars, cafes and restaurants in the city and on the mountains with many different local dishes and some international cuisine. There are also shops here for tourists to find gifts and souvenirs. Self catering holidaymakers will be able to purchase food and drink from the local supermarket.
Various excursions are offered here including horse drawn carriage rides through the mountains. There are several fortresses, museums and churches such as the Sanctuary Church in Maria Kirchental. This beautiful part of Austria also boasts some wonderful natural features such as the Prax Ice Cave. Salzburg is a wonderful city to visit full of history and culture and was the birth place of Mozart. Excursions are also available to the highest waterfalls in Europe at Krimmel. Nature lovers can take to the mountain and feed the wildlife with native deer coming out of the forests.
July and August are generally the warmest months in his part of Austria with average high temperatures of about 23 degrees centigrade. In winter the temperature can drop 2 or 3 degrees below zero at night, especially in December and January. However, these two months are also often dry with the risk of rain more likely in July.
Salzburg Airport is the closest to Salzburger Saalachtal and has scheduled flights to other Austrian cities as well as to European cities such as Dublin, Bonn, Hamburg, London, Zurich, Warsaw, Stockholm, Copenhagen, St Petersburg, Brussels and Rotterdam. Salzburger Saalachtal is approximately an hour’s drive away from the airport. Car rental firms including Avis, Charterline, Europcar, Hertz, Megadrive, Sixt, The Shuttle and Sunny Cars can be found on the ground floor of the multi story car park at the airport. Taxis are also available outside the airport terminal.
